Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

Our research aims at developing and applying computational and statistical methodologies for analyses of multi-omics data from human diseases. We have developed and co-developed several bioinformatics tools that are freely available for academic use. Currently, our primary research activities span the following areas: Methodologies to analyze high-throughput omics data, Single-cell sequencing analysis, Characterizing and modeling cancer omics, and Pharmacogenomics.

The Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics conducts research in epidemiology and biostatistics across a broad range of areas within biomedical science. The department is among the largest of its type in Europe and has especially strong research profiles in psychiatric, cancer, reproductive, pediatric, pharmaco, genetic, and geriatric epidemiology, eating disorders, precision medicine, and biostatistics.

Part of the success of our department is due to our collaborative spirit where one factor is that researchers at the Department share and co-finance common resources (e.g., IT and an applied biostatistics group). The department is situated at campus Solna. Further information can be found at http://ki.se/en/meb

Division

At Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics (MEB) of Karolinska Institutet (KI), we carry out epidemiologic research in a wide range of medical areas, including cancer, psychiatry, neurological diseases, etc. Our projects aim to increase knowledge about causes of diseases and to translate the knowledge towards clinical application. Biostatistical analysis is of central importance in the interdisciplinary research conducted at MEB. Much of our methodological tools relies on statistical genetics, molecular epidemiology as well as biostatistics. MEB has the largest critical mass of academic biostatisticians in Sweden and is one of the largest among Nordic countries. Overall, we provide a stimulating and active research environment that facilitates both internal and external collaborations with world-class scientists.

Duties

The postdoctoral candidate will collaborate closely with our team members and external collaborators to analyze different omics-data for cancers and other complex diseases using statistical methodologies and bioinformatics tools.

Entry requirements

Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Your profile

The ideal postdoctoral candidate will have a robust background in bioinformatics or computational biology, with formal training in bioinformatics, computer science, statistics, computational biology, or a related field during their PhD. The candidate is expected to demonstrate previous productivity, often by publications, but not exclusively. The position requires demonstrated experience in analyzing next-generation sequencing data, including the development of bioinformatics pipelines for RNA sequencing, as well as downstream gene expression analysis. Proficiency in analysis of single-cell RNA sequencing, pharmacogenomics or metagenomics is advantageous.

Expertise in R programming is essential, with additional skills in languages such as C/C++ and Python considered beneficial.

The successful candidate should be well-informed and have curiosity concerning issues of health, biology and statistical problems; thoroughness in dealing with research data; interest and persistence in learning new tasks; ability to collaborate in a multidisciplinary group. Proficiency in both spoken and written English is required.

Location: Solna Campus

Type of scholarship

The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process

An application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  • A complete list of publications
  • A summary of current work (no more than one page)

The application is to be submitted on the Varbi recruitment system.
