The Chair of Circular Engineering for Architecture (CEA) at ETH Zurich is seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual to fill the postdoctoral position in the fields of construction and computer science. The successful candidates will join a dynamic research team working on innovative approaches to advance circular construction practices through digital technologies. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the development of computational design with building materials available for reuse, enabling a more sustainable and regenerative built environment.

Project background

The postdoctoral position is focused on leveraging digitalization for circular strategies in construction. The selected candidate will be involved in developing and testing tools for reality capture, quality assessment, 3D modelling, and computational design in the built environment, operating at the intersection of construction informatics, engineering, and logistical aspects.

Job description

As a postdoctoral researcher, your responsibilities will include:

  • Lead research projects in circular construction, focusing on material reuse, waste reduction, and lifecycle analysis
  • Develop and implement scanning, scan-to-BIM, and computer vision strategies for reality capture of the building stock
  • Use immersive technologies to enhance construction processes and training
  • Publish findings in high-impact journals and present at international conferences
  • Interact with industry partners on gathering data for circular construction
  • Supervision of Master, and/or Bachelor students

Profile

To be considered for this position, you should meet the following qualifications:

  • A PhD in a relevant field (e.g., Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Environmental Science, Architecture)
  • Demonstrated experience in reality capture technologies, BIM, and computer vision
  • Proven track record of research in construction or related fields
  • Excellent communication skills in English; proficiency in French and/or German is a plus

A strong interest in exploring the intersections of AI, XR, and strategy gaming within the context of circular construction.
