Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

Are you looking for a place to develop as a data-driven researcher, deepen your knowledge, and expand your skills? We can offer you a vibrant learning environment, ample opportunity to collaborate with experienced researchers, and freedom to develop your own ideas.

Your mission

The postdoctoral work will focus on long-term clinical outcomes in persons with immune-mediated inflammatory disease in rheumatology and neurology (primarily rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis) using high quality prospectively-collected data on treatment outcomes from electronic medical records and national registries. Our goal is to evaluate the risk of disease worsening and treatment-related adverse events in relation to patient characteristics, including pre-disease (prodromal) markers, comorbidity, imaging, biomarkers, and disease/modifying therapy exposure, integrating advanced machine learning techniques with traditional clinical epidemiology.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will work with an international research team to design and conduct research relevant to the group’s agenda while receiving advanced training to enhance professional skills and research independence. The Postdoc’s time will be devoted to analysis, manuscript preparation and career development. The candidate will be asked to collaborate with others, including graduate students, and provide her/his expertise in team projects. There are no teaching requirements, but opportunities to teach can be facilitated.

Your profile

Experience with large health-related data sets is a requirement, as well as being an independent programmer with expertise in Python, R, STATA, or SAS and with advanced knowledge of relevant computational or statistical methods. An education in epidemiology/public health, biostatistics, or data science, documented excellent scientific writing ability, and strong oral communication skills in English are expected. As we have a close collaboration with patient representatives, clinical researchers and nurses, clinical experience and the ability to communicate popular science is a strong asset.

To be eligible for employment as a postdoctor a phd or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a Swedish phd is required. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled at the latest at the time of the employment decision. It is considered as an advantage if you have completed your doctoral degree within the last three years, if there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier.

What do we offer?

A creative and inspiring environment with wide-ranging expertise and interests. Karolinska Institutet is one of the world’s leading medical universities. At Karolinska Institutet, we conduct successful medical research and hold the largest range of medical education in Sweden. At KI, you get to meet researchers working with a wide range of specialisms and methods, giving you ample opportunity to exchange knowledge and experience with the various scientific fields within medicine and health. It is the crossover collaborations, which have pushed KI to where it is today, at the forefront of global research. Several of the people you meet in healthcare are educated at KI. A close relationship with the health care providers is important for creating groundbreaking top quality education and research. Karolinska Institutet is also a state university, which entitles you to several benefits through our collective agreement.

Location

The position is located within the Department of Medicine, Solna. The department consists of ten divisions and each division consists of several research groups. The position will be in the team of Principal Researcher Thomas Frisell within the Clinical Epidemiology Division (KEP). At KEP, epidemiologists and biostatisticians work closely with clinician scientists to answer clinically important questions. In all, we are approximately 150 researchers at the Division. The Division also arranges a PhD program for clinicians, which provides teaching opportunities at the post-graduate level.

In the Chronic Inflammatory Disease Research Group, there are approximately 50 people (Doctoral students, Postdoctoral Fellows, Professors, Senior Researchers) with different backgrounds but common research interests, namely the study of chronic inflammatory diseases using Swedish national registers and clinical data. We have a strong interest in cutting edge methodologies, and a wide network of research and clinical collaborators.
