Position Description

A postdoctoral fellowship position is available in the Elbert Laboratory in the Department of Neurology at University of Washington in Seattle, Washington, USA. The project is funded for two years, beginning July 1, 2024 by the Alliance for Therapies in Neuroscience (ATN), a research partnership between academia and industry to transform the fight against brain diseases and disorders of the central nervous system.  The successful applicant will work closely with industry sponsors who will help to guide the project.

The Elbert lab and the industry partner are interested in developing mechanistic, predictive models of neurodegenerative disease with a focus on Alzheimer’s Disease. Computational models will be developed that utilize data obtained from a wide range of experiments, from basic biochemical methods to advanced imaging techniques.  Currently, a number of mathematical models exist to describe the onset and progression of Alzheimer’s Disease and the effects of anti-amyloid therapies on disease progression.  The models are informed by a variety of experimental data, utilize different model structures/modeling techniques, are often closed source or coded in proprietary software packages with poor interoperability, and process experimental data in a non-FAIR compliant manner.

Postdoctoral scholars are represented by UAW 4121 and are subject to the collective bargaining agreement, unless agreed exclusion criteria apply. For more information, please visit the University of Washington Labor Relations website

The salary for this position will be $5,705 per month ($68,460 per year), commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. Other compensation associated with this position may or may not include Startup, Relocation Incentive/Moving Allowance Administrative supplement for a defined administrative role, or Productivity Incentive.

This position is on an annual 12-month service period (July 1 – June 30). The anticipated start date is 7/1/24.

Qualifications

Completed PhD or a foreign equivalent.

The current project seeks to revolutionize the entire process from data to prediction with a paramount focus on reproducibility and extensibility. The ideal candidate for this position will possess:

  • A strong background in scientific programing
  •           Interest in developing open-source data analysis and modeling tools in one of the following languages: Python, Julia, or C .
  •         A strong interest in automated extraction, analysis and standardization of multimodal biological, biochemical and medical experimental data
  •          Experience with parameter optimization and ODE-based modeling
  •           Strong communication skills to interface with experts within the ATN, document the software and publish the results in the peer-reviewed literature
