Responsibilities

The Faculty of Humanitiesis seeking a professor (W2) of Slavic studies with a focus on Polish literature and a second Slavic literature.

The professorship is expected to teach and conduct research across the field of Slavic studies. We expect the successful candidate to be an expert on Slavic literature and culture with a focus on the Polish language and literature and a second focus in one of the other Slavic languages and literatures in the institute’s research profile (East Slavic studies, South Slavic studies, Czech studies). Furthermore, an active contribution to the faculty’s cross-cutting interdisciplinary focus on (post)colonial orders is expected, and a special emphasis on the faculty’s planned research in environmental humanities.

The professor is expected to play an active role in the bachelor’s and master’s degree programs and in the instruction of students pursuing a teacher training degree in the subject. We also expect active participation in the bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in Eastern European studies.

Your profile

We are looking for a candidate with an outstanding academic track record and research experience in the professorship field. We also expect candidates to have completed a qualified doctorate and a further qualification (e.g., a Habilitation, a second book, or a positive intermediate evaluation on a junior professorship). These qualifications should reflect the applicant’s knowledge of the Polish language and literature as well as the second Slavic language and literature.

Applicants are expected to have relevant, internationally recognized publications in the focus literatures (Polish language and literature and one of the other languages and literatures in the institute’s research profile). Also desired are relevant, internationally recognized publications in at least one of the research areas listed below:

  • (post-)colonial orders
  • environmental humanities

Linkages to other research areas of the University of Hamburg are desired as well. We also expect work experience in interdisciplinary contexts.

The successful candidate is required to have experience and a successful track record in acquiring external funding for projects. In addition, very good didactic skills and experience in university teaching, particularly in the fields of digital and interdisciplinary teaching, are expected. We also expect extended stays abroad in the countries of the target literatures and excellent skills in the target languages.

Experience with managing staff and academic self-governance is desired.

Non-German-speaking post holders are expected to acquire the language skills necessary to teach in German (level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) within 2 years of commencing employment.
