About the role

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering has an exciting new opportunity for a Reader in Surface Hydrology and is looking for a highly able, enthusiastic and well-motivated applicant wishing to develop a career in a world leading teaching and research institution.

The Department has an outstanding international reputation and has been awarded the top rating in every national review of university research held since 1986.  You will join the Environmental and Water Resource Engineering (EWRE) Section, which is known worldwide for its wide ranging and high-quality programme of research and teaching activities.

Candidates will be considered from across the breadth of the field and will also be expected to collaborate across other disciplines. A strong track record of research excellence and originality will be required to establish a programme of research that can contribute to water management, hydrological simulation and forecasting, water resources and risk planning, climate change adaptation, and ecohydrology, among others. You will also contribute to teaching activities.

The post is full time and open-ended.

 

What you would be doing

You will plan, resource, and direct an original and high-quality research programme in Surface Hydrology.

You will also:

  • Supervise, train and mentor research students and staff with the highest scientific rigour;
  • Disseminate results through leading international journals and conferences;
  • Engage with industry and other agencies to identify current challenges for research
  • Maintain a leading and prominent role in the research area.

You will contribute to the Department’s wide spectrum of Undergraduate and Postgraduate teaching through lectures, seminars, course work, tutorials and personal supervision.

 

What we are looking for

  • You must have a PhD (or equivalent) in Hydrology or a related field.
  • You will have expertise and an established national and developing international reputation in Surface Hydrology.
  • A significant track record in attracting high levels of research funding is essential.
  • You must also have an excellent record of research, evidenced by a portfolio of research publications, confirming at least a national standing (commensurate with career stage).
  • Experience of training Undergraduate and Postgraduate students together with supervision of higher degrees (PhD) is essential as well as the ability to collaborate and build sustainable effective working relationships, both internally and externally.

Salary: Minimum starting salary of £81,342 per annum for Reader level
