Copenhagen Business School invites applications for 10-month full-time research assistant position/videnskabelig assistent (pre-doc)at the intersection of economics, political economy, and history. The research assistant will be part of the project Who Became a Nazi? A Structured Database of the German Denazification Questionnaires, 1945–1949” (DeNazDB). The project is led by Dr. Jan Stuckatz (CBS) and Dr. Victor Gay (Toulouse School of Economics). The research team includes Dr. Mikkel Dack (Rowan University), and Dr. Selina Hofstetter (Tecnológico de Monterrey). The project is funded by the Agence Nationale de la Recherche and the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (ANR LinkDFG Link).

The research assistant will be based at the Department of International Economics, Government and Business (EGB). The expected starting date is around 1 April 2025, but flexible.

The Project

The DeNazDB project aims to answer, what led Germans to support and join the Nazi party? Did they benefit materially from their membership? And how did they justify their choices? To answer these questions, the DeNazDB project is analyzing individual-level longitudinal data from the denazification questionnaires (Fragebogen) distributed in Germany’s U.S. occupation zone between 1945 and 1949. The Fragebogen contains detailed information about individuals’ past membership in Nazi organizations, retrospective voting records, as well as educational and occupational histories, income, assets, and other socio-demographics. The detailed individual-level data will allow us to answer which demographic groups voted for or joined the Nazi movement, and which life events led to these decisions.

Tasks

To this end, the project team has developed a relational database from digitized Fragebogen archival material. The main task of the position will be to assist the research team in the development of this existing database. This will entail the following:

  • Coordinate a team of student research assistants in inputting the content of the archival material into the database.
  • Develop and maintain Python & SQL code to re-structure and clean raw database content.
  • Conduct preliminary data analyses of the database.
  • Conduct literature research based on secondary sources.

The position provides the opportunity to learn and improve coding, data management, and project management skills, and gain experience in an international and interdisciplinary research project at the intersect of economics, political science, and history.

Qualifications

The candidate should possess a master´s degree, or equivalent qualifications and have proficiency in English (written and spoken). The master´s degree could be in political science, economics, or history. In addition, the candidate should have the following qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of German.
  • Competence in coding with Python and/ or R.
  • Competence in quantitative data analysis and visualization.
  • Knowledge of relational database formats (e.g, SQLite, PostgreSQL).

The Department

EGB is a multidisciplinary department that conducts high-quality research in the fields of political science and international business with direct relevance to business, policy-makers, and the public. Research at the department focuses on two principal focus areas Business & Government and International Business, in relation to societal challenges. These challenges include the consequences of inequality; the impact of technological change and digital transformation; the ethical dilemmas facing MNEs, regulatory challenges, the changes brought about by emerging markets and the rise of Asia; the consequences of global shifts for public policy, and the relationship between business and democracy. Research in the area of Business and Government is rooted in the disciplines political science and political economy. Faculty apply advanced quantitative and qualitative methods to generate systematic knowledge about business-government relations.

EGB delivers research-based teaching to undergraduates and graduate students in programs such as International Business and Politics, International Business, and International Business in Asia. Terms of employment

Appointmentand salary will be in accordance with the Ministry of Finance’s agreement with the Central Academic Organisation. The regular working time is 37 hours per week. Part-time employment is possible. The research assistant is expected to be physically present at the department on a regular basis. There is no teaching requirement for this position.

Recruitment procedure

The Recruitment Committee expects to shortlist minimum two applicants; when possible five or more applicants will be shortlisted. The shortlisted applicants will be assessed by the Assessment Committee. All applicants will be notified of their status in the recruitment process shortly after the application deadline.

Once the recruitment process is completed each applicant will be notified of the outcome of their application.
