An enthusiastic and highly motivated Research Associate is required to join an ambitious new team working in the field of human pluripotent stem cell (hPSC) biology and heart development. You will lead exciting research aimed at understanding the molecular biology of human cardiac progenitors and the determinants of cardiac cell fate, to support the development of regenerative medicine and to uncover the causes of congenital heart disease (CHD). The position is funded through a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship awarded to Dr Matthew Birket: “Understanding Cardiac Progenitors to deliver Regenerative Medicine and Disease Modelling”. The work will build on data recently reported by the Birket group: https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2024.08.15.607916v1

This next phase of the project aims to further resolve the cell fate decisions in early cardiac development and understand the regulatory mechanisms. The role of the transcription factor HAND1 will be at the centre of these investigations. The practical element of the project will be based on the in vitro culture, manipulation, differentiation and measurement of hPSCs. Our lab uses cutting-edge technologies including single cell genomics and multiomics, CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing and CRISPR library screening, combined with 2D and 3D cardiac differentiation models and lineage tracing systems. In addition to leading their own research projects, the appointed candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to the projects of several PhD students in the group. The team is dynamic and ambitious as well as being welcoming and supportive.

You should have experience with pluripotent stem cell culture and a range of molecular biology techniques. You should be familiar with genomics data analysis.

What you will get in return:

  • Fantastic market leading Pension scheme
  • Excellent employee health and wellbeing services including an Employee Assistance Programme
  • Exceptional starting annual leave entitlement, plus bank holidays
  • Additional paid closure over the Christmas period
  • Local and national discounts at a range of major retailers

As an equal opportunities employer we welcome applicants from all sections of the community regardless of age, sex, gender (or gender identity), ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation and transgender status.  All appointments are made on merit.
