The position is located at the Department of Chemistry – BMC where we conduct chemical research with focus on life science. We have extensive instrumentation for production, purification and analysis of bioactive molecules, biomolecules and biological samples. We also conduct education at bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral level in analytical chemistry, biochemistry and organic chemistry with well-equipped course laboratories for this purpose. Approximately 100 people from all over the world work at the department and English is the main working language. The department is located at the Biomedical Centre in Uppsala.

We are looking for a research engineer to be part of the department’s support function. The unit consists of three research engineers whose main task is to assist the department’s researchers and teachers with technical and laboratory support. We collaborate with the department’s administrative staff as well as central support functions at both university and campus level to provide the best possible service to our coworkers.
Duties
The tasks are very varied as they are based on the needs of our coworkers. Initially, the tasks will include basic maintenance of instruments and equipment as well as handling error reports. You will act as a contact person in cases where external service technicians need to be consulted. Purchase and unpacking of consumables and chemicals, management of laboratory waste, inventory of fixed assets and inventory of chemicals in the KLARA chemical management system are also included. You will be the contact person towards the campus management/Akademiska Hus for renovations and installation of infrastructure in our premises. Some unqualified tasks are also included in the position. We expect you to develop professionally and in the long term there will be opportunities for more advanced tasks.
The support function is responsible for informing the department’s employees about university and department rules and routines in a number of different areas. You are expected to contribute to this work, in particular by keeping up to date with both internal and external safety regulations and ensure that a safe laboratory environment is maintained.
Requirements
We are looking for a person with a university degree in natural sciences or technology, preferably with a focus on chemistry/chemical engineering or equivalent qualifications. Since your primary task is to support researchers and teachers in their work, you must be service minded, flexible and show good collaboration skills. You need to be independent and structured as you are largely responsible for planning your own work. It is also important that you can prioritize among your tasks in an efficient way as there may be peaks with a high workload and conflicting demands. Great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities. The department’s premises are scattered throughout the building and there is lifting and moving of various equipment. Therefore, it is important that you are in good physical shape. You should be able to work in Windows environment and have good knowledge of MS Office. You are expected to quickly learn several administrative systems that are used at Uppsala University. Good knowledge of Swedish and English in both speech and writing is a requirement.
Additional qualifications
Practical experience of mass spectrometry, chromatography and spectroscopy. Experience of instrument maintenance and knowledge of basic infrastructure in laboratory environment. IT skills in addition to those mentioned above. Documented experience of systematic work environment management in a laboratory environment.
About the employment
The employment is a permanent position with 6 months probationary period. Scope of employment: 100 %. Starting date March 1, 2025 or as agreed. Placement: Uppsala
