General Notes

A research technician position is available in Dr. Simon Brandl’s Lab, located at UTMSI in Port Aransas, Tx. The position is part of an NSF-funded project to examine the zoogeochemistry of coral reef ecosystems. A description of the project can be found here. The ideal candidate will be able to commit to the position for a minimum of two years.

Responsibilities

  •  Planning, leading, and assisting with field sampling efforts abroad
  •  Processing of samples for isotope and nutrient analyses
  •  Basic data management
  •  Project management and budgeting
  •  Ordering and inventorying lab equipment

Required Qualifications

  • A university degree (BSc) in ecology, biology, marine science, biochemistry, or similar
  • Proficiency with chemistry laboratory work, including stable isotope analyses, nutrient analyses, or similar
  • Marine field experience, including SCUBA diving or snorkeling in subtidal ecosystems

Preferred Qualifications

  • An ability to work independently, collaboratively, and with great attention to detail
  • Experience with basic data management, project management, and budgeting
  • Experience with basic research administration, including permitting and reporting duties

Salary Range

$35,000 annually

Working Conditions.

  • May work around standard office conditions
  • May work around chemicals in a Lab setting
  • May conduct fieldwork (including marine boating and diving) in unfavorable weather conditions
  • May work abroad for periods of time

Retirement Plan Eligibility:

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
