About the project/work tasks:
Work task will include:
1. 2D and 3D modelling of the effect of climate-controlled surface processes on mountain building.
2. Inverse geodynamic modelling of mountain building applied to the Southern Alps New Zealand.
3. Investigate 3D aspects of mountain belt formation focussing on formation of orogenic oroclines.
The project will involve on-going collaboration with GFZ Potsdam, SCRIPPS, Barcelona University.
The successful candidate will be expected to take a leading role in developing research in these areas and to publish results in leading, peer-reviewed publications. He/she will also be expected to participate in other activities/tasks such as mentoring of master and PhD students.
Qualifications and personal qualities:
- Applicants must hold a Norwegian PhD or an equivalent degree within Tectonics/Geodynamics or must have submitted his/her doctoral thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded.
- Ability to attract external research funding must be documented.
- A background in quantitative tectonic modelling and quantitative earth science is a requirement.
- Documented experience with forward geodynamic and surface process modelling of mountain building is a requirement.
- Experience with and understanding of mountain belts such as the Pyrenees, Andes, and Southern Alps New Zealand is a requirement.
- Evidence of the ability to present and publish the result of research at an international level and documented research potential is a requirement.
- Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner and have the ability to cooperate with others.
- Applicants must have excellent skills in oral and written English.
Special requirements for the position:
The University of Bergen is subjected to the regulation for export control system. The regulation will be applied in the processing of the applications.
The position is based on the following terms:
- The researcher will be a member of the research group in which the subject area of the position belongs.
- Salary expenses should as far as possible be 100 % externally financed.
- The researcher will actively contribute to obtaining external project funding for the academic community, to both themselves and others, from The Research Council of Norway, the EU as well as other sources.
- The research activity is expected to be funded by the projects the researcher and the research group, are working on.
- The head of department and the project leader may instruct the researcher to work towards specific research projects.
- The researcher may partake in duties, participate in committees etc. within the UiB.
- The researcher is normally not obliged to teach but is expected to partake in the supervision of masters and PhD students, to the extent that this is a natural part of the work in the research group.
- The foundation for the position will no longer exist if project funding ceases, and the new law on Government employees etc. regarding termination of employment and preferential rights will be applied.

- position as researcher (code 1109 in the basic collective agreement) and a gross annual salary of NOK 624 500 upon appointment. Further increases in salary are made according to length of service in the position. A higher salary may be considered for a particularly well-qualified applicant.
