About the role

The Department of Mechanical Engineering is seeking a Senior Research Laboratory Technician to support research activities within the Thermofluids Division. A world leading expert in combustion, heat & mass transfer, fluid flow, turbo machinery, and next generation & novel fuels, this position will support our diverse and expert team of Academic and Researchers. Key to ensuring laboratory operations are efficient, the postholder will be supporting groundbreaking research which will push fuel, engine and combustion technologies towards a future of sustainability and safety.

What you would be doing

  • You will be responsible for ensuring the laboratory operations are running efficiently, for the benefit of the research activities taking place within the Division. 
  • You will be supporting the research activities within the Thermofluids laboratories, including assisting with data collection from Engine and Combustion Test Cells, and Turbomachinery. In addition, you will also provide CAD design services to manufacture bespoke components. 
  • You will be part of the wider Technical team identifying upgrades and helping to coordinate necessary works. 
  • At busy periods in the teaching terms, you may be asked to support the Thermofluids teaching team. 

 

What we are looking for

We are looking for applicants with a BTEC/HNC or recognised apprentice background (or equivalent experience, with work experience in a Mechanical Engineering environment. 

 You will need practical experience in the following areas: 

  • Operating manual machine tools  
  • Standard pipe fitting 
  • Installing high-pressure tubing and gas supply fitting 
  • Advising on technical requirements for advanced research work 
  • Troubleshooting complex problems and coming up with innovative solutions. 

 You will also need knowledge of: 

  • Internal combustion engines 
  • Health & Safety in a research environment 

Experience and/or understanding of CNC tools, fabrication, technical drawings, ARDUINO, Labview or vehicle battery technologies would be advantageous.

This position will be based within the Technical Services team for the Thermofluids Division, working with Academics and Researchers across a range of disciplines from Turbomachinery, to Building fire and Wildfire Science, to future generations of fuel technologies. The postholder will be support research with real world applications in safety, sustainability, environmental initiatives. 

As part of the Technical Services team, made up of more than 30 specialist technicians and engineers, you will be part of a community of experts in their fields, contributing to the Department’s research excellence.
