Company Description

Johns Hopkins University is committed to educating its students and cultivating their capacity for lifelong learning, fostering independent and original research, and bringing the benefits of discovery to the world. This mission is succinctly encapsulated in the phrase: “Knowledge for the world.”

Vision

The university strives to strengthen global democracy through discovery, education, dialogue, and public service, bridging the worlds of research and policy to inform evidence-based policymaking worldwide.

History

Founded in 1876 through a $7 million bequest from philanthropist Johns Hopkins, the university was established with the largest philanthropic gift in U.S. history at that time. It was named after its benefactor, an entrepreneur with Quaker roots who believed in improving public health and education in Baltimore and beyond. Daniel Coit Gilman, the university’s first president, set forth a vision of integrating teaching and research, defining the model of the American research university that is emulated globally today
