Umeå University is dedicated to conducting education, research, and public outreach that serve to improve society. Our mission is grounded in the pursuit of knowledge and innovation to address global challenges and contribute to the public good. ​Established on 17 September 1965, Umeå University became Sweden’s fifth university. The foundation was laid through significant efforts, including the establishment of a scientific library in 1951 and the initiation of medical courses in the mid-1950s. 

Educational Approach

Umeå University offers a comprehensive range of over 150 study programs and 1,800 courses, with more than 40 programs and 450 courses conducted entirely in English. Our educational philosophy emphasizes high teacher competence and strong interaction between research, education, collaboration, and innovation. We are committed to providing students with a high-quality education that prepares them for global challenges. 

Campus and Facilities

The university’s main campus, Campus Umeå, is inspired by classic North American campus designs, fostering an environment conducive to interdisciplinary cooperation. At the heart of the campus is Universum, a hub featuring study spaces, an information center, a restaurant, and a café. Adjacent to Universum is Aula Nordica, an auditorium hosting academic ceremonies and cultural events.

In addition to Campus Umeå, the university encompasses the Umeå Arts Campus, situated by the Ume River, which brings together the university’s art colleges and the Bildmuseet art museum. Regional campuses are also located in the neighboring cities of Skellefteå and Örnsköldsvik, extending the university’s reach and impact.
