Welcome to Linnaeus University! Here you’ll meet 2 200 staff members and 40 000 students, all united in following the vision to set knowledge in motion for a sustainable societal development. With us, research and education are conducted with an eye towards the future. Our proximity to the business world, both locally and globally, gives us a wide reach and the ability to create change that makes an impact. All that’s needed is a place where ideas have the space to meet and grow. That’s what we’ve created – and you are invited.
Change starts here!
The Faculty of Technology has a wide range of activities spanning nine different departments through which Linnaeus University provides education and conducts research. The courses in technology cover everything from short courses of a few weeks or months to five-year Master of Science in Engineering courses. The research responds to society’s needs in several broad fields – both in the short and long term – with basic research and applied research in collaboration with stakeholders.
The Department of Building Technology conducts exciting research in the field and has extensive collaborations with corporate partners in both research and education. The department works together with adjacent departments to create a creative environment with challenging education and prominent research. Our research in building technology includes wood construction technology, steel and concrete construction technology, building physics, historical structures, structural health monitoring, life cycle analysis, and building materials. The department currently offers a bachelor’s program in building technology, a bachelor’s program in building design, and a two-year master’s program in sustainable construction technology. We are also developing an innovative 5-years civil engineering program in building technology.
Subject area for the position: Building Technology with a specialisation in energy- and climate- efficient constructions.
Location until further notice: Växjö, Sweden.
Hours and terms: This is a full-time position (100%) for four years.
According to the Higher Education Ordinance, an associate senior lecturer may be employed until further notice, albeit for no less than four years and not more than six years, as determined by the higher education institution prior to employment. According to the Higher Education Ordinance (Chapter 4, Section 12 c), an associate lecturer must, on application, be promoted to senior lecturer if they are (i) eligible for employment as a senior lecturer, and (ii) assessed as suitable for such an appointment in accordance with the assessment criteria used for the position. Starting date: Starting date as agreed upon, preferably in autumn 2025.
Job description
The associate senior lecturer is expected to work with research, education and collaboration. The main part of this position concerns research in energy- and climate-efficient construction with a particular emphasis on applications in timber structures. As part of the research profile Competitive Timber Structures, the appointee will work primarily in subarea (5) on Energy and Climate-Efficient Construction, while also contributing expertise to projects planned with other subareas such as Design of Wood-Based Building Systems (subarea 2) and Industrialised Production along the Value Chain (subarea 3). Among others, the research conducted by the appointee can encompass the following topics:
- Life cycle optimisation of wood-based building systems in early-stage design.
- Life cycle sustainability assessment of buildings, including Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Life Cycle Cost (LCC) Analysis, and Social Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA).
- Primary energy and greenhouse gas modelling of buildings, encompassing the product, construction, service life, and end-of-life stages.
- Building energy simulations and HVAC system optimisations.
- Sustainable and circular construction materials and material resource efficiency.
- Application of BIM, AI and emerging smart technologies in building energy-efficiency.
Further responsibilities include supervising advanced-level thesis projects, and publishing research findings in international scientific journals and conferences. The research environment aims to foster further collaborations with other disciplines and industry partners to develop deeper insights into energy-efficient and low-carbon construction practices. This focus is also relevant for the practical implementation of results based on the needs of industry and business partners.
The position involves pedagogical duties, including teaching, coordinating, and developing advanced-level courses in energy- and climate-efficient construction while integrating research findings into educational programs. The courses to be conducted include existing and new courses such as ‘Circular Construction and Climate Declaration of Buildings’, ‘Sustainability in Concrete, Steel, and Timber Structures’. Administrative tasks related to these responsibilities may also be included in the responsibilities.
Qualifications
According to the Higher Education Ordinance (Chapter 4, Section 4a), anyone who has been awarded a doctorate in Civil Engineering or Building technology, or who has the equivalent academic competence, is qualified for the position of associate senior lecturer. Consideration shall primarily be given to applicants who have been awarded a doctorate, or who have achieved competence equivalent to a doctorate, no earlier than five years prior to the deadline for the application for the position of associate senior lecturer. Applicants who have been awarded a doctorate, or who have achieved competence equivalent to a doctorate, at an earlier point in time may, however, be considered if there are special reasons. Special reasons include sick leave, parental leave, and other similar circumstances.
In order to qualify for the present position, the applicant must also demonstrate documented research experience relevant to the position within Energy- and Climate-efficient Construction. Proficiency in English, with strong oral and written communication skills, is a primary requirement.
Assessment Criteria
In addition to the formal prerequisites related to scientific expertise, experience in teaching in building technology is considered an asset. Documentation of research experience through participation in national or international research projects should be included in the application. The ability to collaborate with research groups or external research partners, work independently, prioritise tasks, and demonstrate leadership skills will also be assessed. Proficiency in Swedish is advantageous. When the university employs new teachers, the choice should fall on those applicants who, based on a qualitative holistic assessment of competence and skills, are considered most likely to successfully perform and develop relevant tasks and contribute to successful development of the organisation. Linnaeus University values diversity in terms of gender, age, ethnicity, and culture, and encourages applicants who contribute to a more balanced and diverse academic community.
The following assessment criteria will be used in the assessment of any application for promotion to senior lecturer:
The assessment of research expertise should be guided by the independence, volume, and quality of the candidate’s research. Teaching expertise should be apparent from pedagogical work, including development, planning, implementation, and evaluation of teaching, as well as supervision and examination. Teaching expertise should furthermore include a reflective approach to students’ learning and to the applicant’s own role as a teacher. Further assessment criteria are:
- Demonstrated ability to independently plan and execute research projects, secure research funding, and publish scientific works.
- Completion of formal pedagogical qualifications, including higher education pedagogical and supervisor training.
- Evidence of pedagogical merit through teaching, curriculum development, pedagogical enhancements at both basic and advanced levels, and course management or responsibility for significant course components.
- Collaboration with other researchers and collaboration on grant applications with experts in related fields to advance knowledge.
- The application must include a certificate of at least 25 hours of teaching experience conducted in Swedish, preferably lectures.
