Position Summary

The Herron School of Art and Design at IU Indianapolis invites applications for a Clinical Assistant Professor in Art Therapy to begin in August 2025. The position will reside in the Art Therapy program, which offers a Master of Arts degree. This position provides the opportunity and resources to help expand upon and further develop a creative and innovative art therapy program with unique access to clinical, research and community partners, enhancing student and faculty experiences. Rank and salary are commensurate with professional experience, teaching, and current professional status.

Duties:

    • The successful candidate will be an active participant in a cohesive faculty team with varied interests and experiences within the Art Therapy Program.
    • Responsibilities include teaching, student recruitment and advising, and curriculum development; contributing to the School and University through service; and ongoing engagement in scholarly, creative, and professional activities.
    • Management of the clinical internships including administrative duties related to the development and maintenance of the internships. This will include active involvement in coordinating placement throughout the summer.
    • On-site clinical supervision of graduate art therapy students.
    • The ideal candidate will also contribute to the school by bringing a diverse perspective, way of thinking, and/or unique set of experiences that expands the intellectual conversation of the field.
    • The typical course load for Clinical Track faculty is 3/3. This position offers a one-course release for on-site clinical supervision of students.

Herron’s 60-credit Master of Arts in Art Therapy Program embraces the impact that creative therapies have upon the health and mental well-being of those we engage. Basic Qualifications
  • A master’s degree in art therapy is required, or a doctoral degree in art therapy or closely related field. Applicants must hold the ATR-BC credentials. The Indiana License in Mental Health Counseling is required within 6 months of hire.
  • Human service experience as an art therapist; demonstrated scholarly, studio, and professional engagement; prior teaching, supervising and advising students, ongoing scholarly/creative work, community collaborations, and service to the university and/or professional organizations.
  • In addition to a solid grounding in direct art therapy practice, the ideal candidate will demonstrate expertise as evidenced by scholarship in areas such as Teaching and through their Clinical Practice. Key areas of interest to the department include:
      • Commitment to community and socially engaged practices
      • Ability to work with colleagues from across the school, campus, and community
      • Art Therapy that seeks to serve diverse communities and stakeholders
