Job Description
Do you want to work with systematic biology, with the support of competent and friendly colleagues in an international environment? Do you want an employer that invests in sustainable employment and offers safe, favorable working conditions? Welcome to apply for employment as a Postdoctoral Fellow at Uppsala University.
At the Department of Organismal Biology, we conduct teaching and research on evolution, development and function at the organismal level. We also study the deepest branches of the tree of life using bioinformatics and experimental molecular techniques. Research on how chemicals of anthropogenic origin interact with cell functions and give rise to long-term health effects in humans and animals is also carried out. For more information, see www.iob.uu.se .
The lab focuses on understanding the evolution of genomes and the genetic basis for adaptation in fungi. We recently discovered that many fungi carry massive transposable elements, called Starships, which mobilize a large diversity of fungal genes. We have now been able to decipher how Starships move within genomes, but a growing body of evidence suggests that they can also move between genomes. The main goal of the position is to understand the ecological and genomic context in which Starships exist. This will be done by genetically modifying model strains so that strains with and without Starships can be compared under controlled conditions.
Job duties
You will work mainly in the wet laboratory. The focus will be on transformations of the fungus Aspergillus fumigatus and potentially related species. This will also include vector construction using yeast and/or bacterial transformations. Methods may also include CRISPR/Cas9. You will also be expected to analyze the data generated, including some bioinformatic work. You will be expected to communicate results both at international conferences and by writing scientific articles for publication.
Qualification requirements
Applicants should have a PhD in molecular biology/evolutionary biology or a related field. You should have previous postdoctoral experience working with fungi. Experience with molecular techniques is a requirement. Great importance will be placed on personal suitability, you are organized, have good problem-solving skills, communication and collaboration. The applicant must have documented experience and skills in oral and written presentation in English.
Desirable/meritorious in other respects
Bioinformatic analysis of genomic data. Previous experience with Aspergillus fumigatus is desirable. Knowledge of presenting data and performing statistical analyses is also an asset.
