Job Description

The Johns Hopkins University Krieger School of Arts and Sciences (KSAS) seeks a Laboratory Manager within the Mind Brain Institute to assist and support research projects that involve neurobiological study in non-human primates under the supervision of the Principal Investigator.
 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Manage laboratory, scheduling, and interfacing with IRB and IACUC organizations.
  • Helping with grant submission and daily activities in a systems neuroscience laboratory.
  • Oversee, orient, and train graduate students to handle non-human subjects and train them on behavioral tasks.
  • Helping with neuroimaging and neurophysiological experiments.
  • Collaborate closely with the principal investigator to supervise and guarantee that the laboratory, faculty, students, and staff adhere to all occupational health and laboratory safety regulations.
  • May assist with the development and implementation of procedures, policies, and safety protocols for the lab.
  • Assists with lab duties including supply inventory, equipment inventory, ordering and tracking.
  • Oversee the receipt and handling of laboratory supplies and equipment deliveries, including picking up, storing, and distributing items as needed.

Additional Duties

  • Performing specialized and routine procedures.
  • Behavioral training of NHP.
  • Assisting during aseptic surgeries.
  • Ensuring regulatory compliance.
  • Assisting postdoctoral associates, as needed.
  • Carrying out experiments including pharmacological, behavioral, and physiological experiments.
  • Maintains equipment upkeep.
  • Performs preliminary data analysis.
  • Manages DEA requirements.
  • Tracks expenses, and purchases.
  • Performs background research for proposed studies.
  • Schedules and coordinates lab meetings.
  • Monitor NHP for illness, injury, or distress and notify the veterinarian when appropriate, and ensure enrichment for NHP.
  • Weighs and administers drugs.
  • Instructs other lab personnel in specialized procedures and techniques, including regulatory compliance.
  • Provide documents/information as needed to the business office.
 

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proficient in proactive communication with key stakeholders, staff, and students to address questions and concern.
  • Highly organized, with superb attention to detail.
  • Must have a team player mindset and be able to work independently if necessary.
  • Previous experience with systems neuroscience (as a manager, student, or a tech).
  • Use professional judgment and take full responsibility for decisions, impacts, and outcomes.
  • Must be able to manage time, choose what is essential for the lab and experiments, and proceed accordingly.
  • Assist with additional lab administrative activities as needed.

Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications

  • Ability to run an anesthesia machine.
  • Animal colony maintenance and compliance.

Supervisory Responsibility

  • Supervise graduate students and postdocs.
  • Interface and be the key contact person for IACUC and any lab-related issues.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or a related field.
  • Five years of related experience, including proven technical knowledge and laboratory experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree with related graduate research may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
  • Strong veterinary surgery skills with at least 10+ years of experience.
  • Previous experience managing a large systems neuroscience laboratory.
  • Experience training animals on complex behavioral paradigms.
  • Experience maintaining animal colony.
  • Programming/instrumentation abilities.
  • 10+ years of being a senior lab tech or manager.
  • Strong veterinary surgical skills.
  • Extensive background in training graduate students on lab compliance and performing various sterile procedures.
