At the School of Education, Culture and Communication (UKK) our students mainly study programmes relating to teacher education, but we also offer programmes and courses in languages and communication, mathematics/applied mathematics, physics, music and opera as well as the preparatory technical foundation year. MDU’s research specialisation educational sciences and mathematics is part of the School. We collaborate with the surrounding community and our international partners.

Position description
As a lecturer, your main tasks are teaching. Teaching also includes supervision, examination, course evaluation and course development. Collaboration is an integral part of the University’s research and education mission and as a lecturer you actively contribute to the University’s development work. The tasks also include general administration and competence development as well as participating in the daily activities, in the work of the subject and the academy.
This position involves teaching a variety of English courses, primarily focusing on language proficiency and different types of communication, including academic writing. The position may also involve teaching other English courses, e.g. in the teacher training programmes, and supervising theses and degree projects. It may also include translation and/or language review of the university’s internal and external communications, policy documents and so on.
In order to succeed and thrive in the role of lecturer, you will need to contribute to and be active in the work of the subject group and higher organizational units, for example by participating in various meetings, events and development efforts.
Qualification requirements
The qualification requirements for appointment as a lecturer at Mälardalen University are a Master’s degree or equivalent competence, as well as documented teaching skills.
Teaching skills shall be well documented in such a way that their quality can also be assessed.
In order to be employed as a teacher at MDU, training in higher education teaching and learning, or equivalent acquired knowledge, is required. A person appointed as a lecturer but lacking training in higher education teaching and learning will be offered in-house training within two and a half years. The requirements regarding training in higher education teaching and learning at Mälardalen University correspond to ten weeks of study.
In addition to the basic eligibility requirements according to the Appointment Regulations for MDU, some additional requirements apply to this position. For this particular position, you are further expected to have an excellent command of spoken and written English, including the ability to teach in and about English and to communicate at an academic level in the language.
Assessment criteria
The assessment criteria will be based partly on the degree of skill required for the position and partly on the ability and suitability otherwise required to carry out the work duties.
In addition to the basic eligibility assessment criteria according to the Appointment Regulations for Mälardalen University, there are also some other criteria that apply to this position:
- previous experience in teaching and developing English courses at university level with a focus on technical English, business communication and/or academic English, but also English courses in teacher education
- experience in the supervision of theses and degree projects
- good knowledge of ICT and digital teaching
- higher academic education than Master’s level
- previous experience in translation and language review (Swedish-English)
In an overall assessment of suitability, emphasis is also placed on personal abilities. All employees at MDU are expected to cooperate and treat colleagues and students with respect, take responsibility for the organisation and their own work duties and contribute to a positive work environment.
Emphasis is also placed on your ability to work both independently and with others, as well as having excellent social skills in the role of teacher as well as colleague. You should be able to relate to given frameworks such as curricula and previous teaching methods, but also contribute with your own initiatives, innovations and solutions. You should also have a good ability to adapt to different student groups with varying needs and show motivation to offer good education under the conditions that apply.
