Overview
Our Applied Health Research PhD provides applicants with a unique opportunity to apply rigorous methods in real-world settings which have a positive impact on health and healthcare outcomes.
Introduction
The Institute of Population Health has expertise across many disciplines such as statistics, qualitative analysis, evidence synthesis, implementation science, pedagogy, participatory research, mixed methods, psychology and economics. A PhD in Applied Health Research will involve application of methods from one or more of these disciplines to address questions important to patients, health professionals, policy makers and other stakeholders. You’ll have a team of supervisors, including methodologists, clinicians and policy makers. The institute hosts a range of research groups, enabling you to network with people with similar interests.
Research topics
We welcome proposals for research topics from PhD candidates across a wide range of applied health research fields. Examples of topics include:
- Core outcome sets – development and uptake
- Development of complex interventions, feasibility and acceptability
- Recruitment and retention in clinical trials
- Diagnostic assessment development and validation
- Healthcare education and teaching packages.

Funding your PhD
If you’re a UK national, or have settled status in the UK, you may be eligible to apply for a Postgraduate Doctoral Loan worth up to £30,301 to help with course fees and living costs.
There’s also a variety of alternative sources of funding. These include funded research opportunities and financial support from UK research councils, charities and trusts. Your supervisor may be able to help you secure funding.

Duncan Norman Research Scholarship
If you’re awarded this prestigious scholarship, you’ll receive significant funding to support your postgraduate research. This includes full payment of your PhD fees and a cash bursary of £17,000 per year while you study. One award is available in each academic year.

Facilities and resources
The Institute of Population Health is located in several buildings across the University campus, including the Waterhouse Building, Whelan Building, Thompson-Yates Building, and Eleanor Rathbone Building. Our postgraduate researchers have access to dedicated research facilities applicable to their specific PhD projects, along with a range of meeting and social spaces.
