Health humanities is an emerging research area that explores the intersection of English Literature, the Humanities more generally (including history), Health, Healthcare, and Wellbeing. The Health Humanities Research Group welcomes research projects that investigate all aspects of health humanities within our wide and diverse research specialisms.
Research projects should align with the research strengths of the Health Humanities Research Group. These include medieval and early modern dietary culture; Shakespeare; early-modern women’s health, pregnancy, and childbirth; mental health in the nineteenth century; ageing in modernist and contemporary culture. These topics, or a combination of these topics, are welcome doctoral research areas.
The Health Humanities Research Group are: Professor Siân Adiseshiah (ageing and contemporary); Dr Joan Fitzpatrick (medieval, early modern, and Shakespeare), Dr Jade French (ageing, care, and modernism); Dr Sara Read (early-modern women’s health); Dr Claire O’Callaghan (mental health in the nineteenth century); Dr Anne-Marie Beller (mental health in the nineteenth century, Victorian lunatic asylums).

Entry requirements for United Kingdom
The minimum criteria for doctoral study is a master’s degree and an upper second class bachelor degree or equivalent qualifications and experience together with an English Language qualification. Currently accepted English Language qualifications are listed on the university website.

Fees and funding
Tuition fees for 2024-25 entry
UK fee
£4,786 Full-time degree per annum
International fee
£21,500 Full-time degree per annum
Fees for the 2024-25 academic year apply to projects starting in October 2024, January 2025, April 2025 and July 2025.
Tuition fees cover the cost of your teaching, assessment and operating University facilities such as the library, IT equipment and other support services. University fees and charges can be paid in advance and there are several methods of payment, including online payments and payment by instalment. Fees are reviewed annually and are likely to increase to take into account inflationary pressures.
