Job Description
The Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics is one of 84 research institutes of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science e.V. (MPG). The MPG is an independent, non-profit research organization, which seeks to promote basic research in the service of the general public.
The Division of Non-Thermal Astrophysics (Director: Prof. Dr. Jim Hinton) at the Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics in Heidelberg (Germany) offers Postdoc positions (m/f/d).
The Division is engaged in a broad programme of experimental and observational activities in the field of ground-based gamma-ray astronomy, playing a central role in the development of major new facilities CTAO (Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory) and SWGO (Southern Wide-field Gamma-ray Observatory), as well as the operating facilities H.E.S.S. and HAWC. Within CTAO MPIK is leading the development of Cherenkov Cameras for the Small and Medium-sized telescopes for the Southern Site in Chile, as well as software developments for many parts of the system up to high-level science analysis tools. The construction of the first CTAO telescopes in Chile will begin in 2026, in parallel to the first Pathfinder for SWGO nearby.
To support our broad instrumentation and astrophysics programme we are seeking talented post-doctoral researchers to join our team. Potential activities include commissioning and science data analysis for the first telescopes at CTAO-South, the legacy programme and science archive for H.E.S.S, joint analysis between HAWC and H.E.S.S., and preparations for SWGO. The division benefits from strong links to theory groups at the institute and astrophysical interpretation and modelling work may also be included.
Requirements
- PhD in Physics or Electronic Engineering.
- Knowledge of relevant technologies and/or data analysis techniques
- Experience of instrument development, calibration, and/or data analysis development
- Willingness to travel (desirable)
- Experience of data analysis using python
The position is initially offered for 2 years and can be extended.
The salary will be paid according to the collective agreement for civil service employees in Germany (TVöD).
