Description The University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine is offering a postdoctoral research fellowship under the direction of Dr. Lauren Powell and Dr. Brittany Watson. The research fellow will join a growing multi-disciplinary team that studies the human-animal bond, animal welfare and behavior, shelter medicine, and community engagement. The team integrates research with community outreach through partnerships with local shelters, animal welfare organizations, and local public secondary schools.

The postdoctoral fellow will focus on the development of assessment tools for humane education programs, and their utility in capturing the impact of humane education on attitudes towards animals, knowledge of animal welfare and behavior. Additional topics of focus could include human-animal interaction, animal cruelty/neglect, human and animal health inequities, family and interpersonal violence.

Qualifications Applicants with doctorates in public health, education, psychology, social work, veterinary medicine, applied ethology and other related fields are encouraged to apply. The successful candidates will have excellent written and oral communication skills, a record of first-author scientific publications, and experience in the use of one or more statistical software packages for quantitative analyses, such as R, SPSS or similar. Knowledge of experimental design, survey methodologies and community-engaged research is desirable. Candidate must be comfortable with both research skills and engaging in community humane education efforts as needed. Excellent communication skills and independent initiative are also highly desirable.
