Job Description

Do you get energy from organizing substantive and impactful events on European cooperation and related themes? Are you looking for a challenging and creative job where no week is the same? Studio Europa Maastricht (SEM) is looking for a program maker!

Job description

SEM is an expertise centre for Europe-related debate and research. You are a generalist with an affinity for Europe. With your sharp view of the world, you know how to recognise social and political trends and translate them into fascinating programmes. You initiate and organise public programmes from A to Z: from writing programme texts to the placement at and organisation of an event. You understand your audience and know how to reach them. You work closely with external partners and experts from Maastricht University.

Within our team, you will work closely with the program and communication team under the supervision of the head of SEM to position the Studio Europa program as well as possible and to create meaningful content around it. We are a compact and close-knit team where personal initiative is appreciated and there is always room for new ideas. Together we roll up our sleeves, work on the organization of events and celebrate successes.

In recent years we have managed to realise a large number of appealing public events: from the Maastricht Debate, the series of European speeches in which Dutch ministers explain the European policy of the Dutch government and the Princess Beatrix lecture to the European Cartoon Award and educational projects for children.

Position, responsibility and assignment
In short, as a programme maker you will do the following:

  • You will be responsible for the development, coordination and production of other activities, such as storytelling and multimedia projects, related to the science translation of European integration from European, national and local perspectives.
  • Some of the programmes you develop take place within the framework of the European Heritage Label, which was awarded by the European Commission to the Maastricht Treaty in 2018 at the initiative of the Province of Limburg and which Studio Europa implements.
  • You make an impact with your programs by reaching media and the general public. You know how to appeal to various target groups.
  • You write catchy program texts and deliver texts for SEM’s online and offline marketing channels to promote programs, collaborations and other activities.
  • As a born networker, you represent SEM in partnerships and are given the opportunity to further expand our network with relevant partners.
  • You proactively pursue internal and external opportunities that demonstrably strengthen the institutional profile and image of Maastricht University as the most European university in the Netherlands.
  • You have a nose for news and social urgencies, follow current affairs in the region, at home and abroad and look for synergy with related European initiatives within the UM, in the city and region.

Job requirements
We are looking for an experienced and creative programmer. You are a doer who enjoys working in a team, but also achieves results independently. You know how to win over your colleagues and other stakeholders for your ideas and are able to forge relationships at all levels within and outside the organisation. With your broad interest in political, social and cultural themes, you are full of new ideas that lead to relevant and appealing public programmes.

  • You have demonstrable experience : you have at least 1 year of experience as a programme maker, event producer with substantive responsibilities for the programme, or as an editor (for example at a newspaper, current affairs programme or talk show).
  • You have a relevant education : you have a university/HBO education in European Studies or a comparable study. You closely follow political and social developments in the Netherlands and Europe and oversee the impact of these on the public program of SEM.
  • You are a storyteller : you intrigue the audience with your programs and use various formats for this, such as lectures, panel discussions, a video series or scrolling story. You write strong and concise program texts that form the basis for the communication team to create content around the program. In addition to fluent Dutch, a good command of English is a requirement.
  • You achieve impact : by defining clear objectives and mapping relevant target groups and collaboration partners, you know how to increase the impact of our programs. In addition, you evaluate completed projects together with the team to implement future improvements and you contribute to the administration and accountability within the department.
  • You recognize opportunities : you are able to map opportunities and connect them to the objectives of SEM and UM. You contribute to project plans to realize external financing. You profile yourself within the SEM network and expand this further with relevant contacts.
