Job Description
The Chair of Robotics, Artificial Intelligence and Real-Time Systems at the TUM School of Computation, Information and Technology is seeking a Research Associate (m/f/d) in the field of “AI-supported setup of general infrastructure and optimization of operation and maintenance of production machines” with the possibility of a doctorate starting in September 2025.
The Chair of Robotics, Artificial Intelligence and Real-Time Systems (Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Alois Knoll) at the TUM School of Computation, Information and Technology (CIT) conducts research in the field of innovative AI systems in various fields. We are a team of international scientists and are seeking a new, dedicated, and motivated team member to work on the application of AI systems in production in collaboration with our industrial partner MAN Truck & Bus SE .

Its product portfolio includes vans, trucks, buses, diesel and gas engines, as well as services related to passenger and freight transport. The position is based in Nuremberg. Here, you would be located in the “Component Production” department. This department specializes in the production of key components for truck drivetrains. The focus is on the manufacture of combustion engines, the assembly of batteries, and the production of other essential components for the entire company. By using state-of-the-art technologies and innovative processes, we ensure the high quality and efficiency of our products.
Business trips to the Technical University of Munich, Garching campus, must be undertaken regularly.
Your tasks:
- Analysis of existing production systems and identification of optimization potential
- Detailed analysis of available literature and current technologies
- Inventory and analysis of the current infrastructure
- Draft of a new AI infrastructure concept
- Development of AI algorithms for machine monitoring and process optimization
- Documentation and evaluation of the results
- Publication of results in international journals and relevant conferences
Requirements:
- Good master’s degree qualifying for a doctorate in production engineering, information technology, business informatics, automation technology or related fields
- Good language skills in German and English
- Interest in scientific work with a high degree of application relevance
- Knowledge and experience in AI methods for requirements and architecture modeling
Further advantages include:
- Experience in production, data science, statistical modeling and machine learning
- Edge Computing, IoT or Industrial IT
- Programming skills in Python
- Use of SQL databases
- Experience in using AWS
We offer:
- Remuneration according to salary group 13 TV-L Bavaria if the personal requirements are met
- The position is initially limited to one year with the option of extension for a further two years
