Job Summary

The Kitzes Lab in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh seeks a Research Technician to work in Pittsburgh, PA, and contribute to analysis of acoustic biodiversity data sets. Will work on analysis of field audio recordings. Will also: (i) assist in the deployment of acoustic recorders; (ii) manage large acoustic data sets; (iii) train and apply machine learning models to identify species present in audio; (iv) use statistical models to estimate species occupancy and abundance; and (vi) annotate audio for species presence.

Must have a bachelor’s degree (or foreign equivalent degree) in Biology, Ecology, Forestry, Natural Resources, or a related field plus six (6) months of experience in a related position.

Must have any experience working with: (i) performing research on soundscapes or passive acoustic data; (ii) conducting independent research projects in bioacoustics in temperate and tropical ecosystems, including both field research and data analysis, as well as projects focused on multiple taxonomic groups (birds, bats, and frogs); (iii) independently training and applying machine learning models soundscape recordings; and (iv) writing scientific papers and/or reports.

Must also be able to hike over uneven terrain for a full workday and be able to identify temperate and/or tropical songbirds by ear.

Experience can be concurrent.
