Job Description

Welcome to Linnaeus University! Here you’ll meet 2 200 staff members and 40 000 students, all united in following the vision to set knowledge in motion for a sustainable societal development. With us, research and education are conducted with an eye towards the future. Our proximity to the business world, both locally and globally, gives us a wide reach and the ability to create change that makes an impact. All that’s needed is a place where ideas have the space to meet and grow. That’s what we’ve created – and you are invited.

Change starts here!

The Faculty of Technology is one of five faculties at Linnaeus University. We bring together the university’s education and research in technical subjects. Our operations are organized into nine departments and a faculty office. We also house the Linnaeus University Centre DISA and two Linnaeus Knowledge Environments: Green Sustainable Development and Digital Transformations. Several of the faculty’s research groups collaborate within the strategic research area of Forest Values.

The Department of Computer Science and Media Technology is responsible for many educational programs at basic and advanced levels within computer science, software engineering, and media technology. Currently, more than 60 staff members work in the department. The department has a strong connection with other departments of Linnaeus University and industrial and public partners.

The advertised position is affiliated with the network security study program, subject area, and a new research group we envision developing. The envisioned group aims to contribute to a safer digital world by addressing security-related challenges in the cyber-physical world, including software systems, networks, and interconnected systems. Its goal is to develop advanced techniques and tools that enhance the security and resilience of software systems against evolving threats. The group will have a multidisciplinary approach and collaborate with other groups at the department and outside, fostering a rich innovation and knowledge exchange environment.

Subject area for the position: Computer Science with Specialization in Network and Cyber Security

Location until further notice: Växjö, Sweden. Since Linnaeus University is located in both Växjö and Kalmar, travel between the two may be required.

Hours/Scope of appointment: 100%
Starting date: Starting date as agreed upon.

Job description

The work duties include the whole research cycle, i.e., from literature reviews, identifying research challenges, and implementing research projects, mainly in network and cyber security areas, to reporting results and publications in highly ranked journals and conferences. In addition, the position holder will teach courses at different levels (incl. course administration and supervision of thesis projects), be involved in syllabi and curricula development, and be a responsible teacher for courses. The teaching tasks mainly relate to subjects of computer and network security, cryptography, internet security, mobile and wireless data security, and digital forensics, as well as to more general courses in computer science and networks.

The position also involves co-supervision of doctoral students, active participation in the operational work and development of a research group and study programs in the subject area, i.e., networks and cyber security, and attracting external research funding.

Qualifications

Applicant must hold a PhD in Computer Science with a specialization in Network and Cyber Security or a closely related field or has equivalent academic qualifications. “Equivalent academic qualifications” generally refers to a degree awarded by a higher education institution abroad that corresponds for the most part to a Swedish doctoral degree in terms of level and quality in Computer Science.

The applicant preferably should have completed training in teaching and learning in higher education, corresponding to the national guidelines provided by the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions.

Eligibility for this position also requires that the doctoral thesis significantly focus on network or cyber security or closely related areas. The closely related areas include such as cryptography, internet security, and digital forensics. Furthermore, the applicant must have documented research and teaching experience, and teaching expertise for courses in network and cyber security and related areas. According to the Linnaeus University appointments procedure, teaching expertise includes planning, implementation, evaluation of teaching, supervision, and examination.

Assessment criteria

The assessment criteria for appointment as a senior lecturer shall be the degree of expertise required as a qualification for the employment. As much attention shall be given to the assessment of teaching expertise as to the assessment of other required qualifications. We expect that the candidate shows documented experience of teaching and research in the job-related areas (network and cyber security) at the doctoral level or beyond.

Experience in teaching and research in more general courses in computer science and related disciplines will be considered as an advantage. Furthermore, we expect the person to have a deep practical knowledge of network equipment and devices and should be able to maintain a practical lab and help with the lab sessions.

Further assessment criteria are documented expertise within one or more of the following research/educational topics:

  • Network Security (internet protocols, intrusion detection, firewalls, etc.)
  • Ethical hacking and penetration testing.
  • Cryptography principles, including encryption algorithms, key management, and secure communication protocols.
  • Internet security, focusing on securing web applications, understanding common threats, and implementing security best practices.
  • Mobile and wireless data security, including securing mobile devices, wireless networks, and understanding mobile threats.
  • Digital forensics, involving the investigation of cyber incidents, evidence collection, and analysis techniques.

Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are expected, preferably demonstrated in papers published in well-known journals and/or presented at well-known conferences in the related areas (Network and Cybersecurity). Teamwork experience, such as previous work in national/international research projects, should also be documented in the application. Active involvement in writing grant applications is also considered meriting, as well as experience in supervising first- and second-cycle thesis projects and doctoral students, preferably supported by a finished pedagogical training in higher education institutions and doctoral supervision.

Since the subject of computer science is male-dominated, we encourage female applicants. Applicants will be selected through a qualitative overall assessment of the documented competencies and skills, focusing on their suitability to conduct teaching and research and contribute to the successful development of the research group and the department. The ability to teach in Swedish is a bonus but not required.

In the overall assessment of an applicant’s skills, particular significance will be attached to the applicant’s potential to have a successful career as a teacher and researcher.

The last date for applications is August 3, 2025.
