The Georg-August-University Göttingen Foundation under Public Law – Lower Saxony State and University Library is seeking to appoint a

Senior Library Director (f/m/d)
– Salary Group A 16 NBesO –

to be filled full-time (suitable for part-time). The position is permanent.

If the civil service requirements are not met, recruitment or classification can also be made according to the provisions of the collective agreement for the public service of the federal states – TV-L.

The Göttingen State and University Library (SUB) is one of the largest and most research-intensive academic libraries in Germany. It is a service provider and partner for efficient literature provision and a wide range of information services at the University of Göttingen and the Göttingen campus as a whole. Preserving scientific results and the cultural and historical heritage and making them permanently accessible is also one of the tasks of the Göttingen State and University Library. Finally, it is a research and development partner for a future-proof research and information infrastructure as well as for the open access transformation in Germany and internationally.
In our daily collaboration, we develop a working culture that promotes trusting and independent cooperation, opens up scope for creativity, and fosters mutual appreciation of work and people.
We would be delighted if we could recruit you for this position and, together with the library staff and partners on campus, you would shape the future of information provision in Göttingen and beyond.

Your responsibilities:
As the Executive Library Director on the SUB’s Executive Committee, you will be responsible for the library and information management of the SUB in close coordination with the department heads and the other members of the Directorate. You will advise the university management and the university committees on all matters relating to information provision and coordinate the necessary cooperation with all relevant university institutions. Together with the SUB’s Academic Director, his or her deputy, and the Administrative Deputy Director, who is primarily responsible for human resources, finance, and logistics, you will form the overall management of the SUB, which will be supported and advised by a committee of department heads that meets weekly. You will represent the SUB Göttingen in a variety of ways in university committees and within the framework of state-wide, supra-regional, and international cooperation.

You possess:

  • A successfully completed academic university degree, preferably with a doctorate
  • Very good knowledge of the national and international development of libraries and other information infrastructure institutions
  • Several years of management experience, including the support of major change processes, preferably acquired in the field of academic libraries and in the university environment
  • Experience in human resources and financial management
  • Knowledge and experience in the application and further development of IT-based information infrastructures
  • Experience in acquiring and implementing third-party funded projects
  • Very good written and spoken German and English skills
  • A cooperative leadership style, communication and social skills, teamwork skills, negotiation skills and implementation strength, as well as the willingness to actively promote the implementation of agile working and leadership in the SUB

What we offer:
A particularly responsible position with extensive creative freedom, the opportunity for mobile working, and extensive decision-making authority.
The Central Library, as your primary place of work, is within walking distance of the city center in the heart of the central campus, with its focus on cultural and social sciences. The North Campus, with its natural sciences focus, is also very easy to reach. Like all employees, you have the opportunity to take advantage of the university’s outstanding sports offerings at low cost and benefit from corporate benefits.

By choosing Göttingen as your place of work, you are choosing a vibrant, culturally diverse university city that combines tradition and modernity, as well as university and non-university research. In addition to the university, the city is home to numerous other academic and cultural institutions and is also a regular venue for a wide variety of cultural events such as the Göttingen Literature Autumn, the Göttingen Jazz Festival, and the International Handel Festival.

Göttingen’s scenic location in the heart of Germany and its excellent transport links via the ICE and Autobahn also keep you closely connected to important metropolitan regions.

The University of Göttingen strives to increase the proportion of women in areas where women are underrepresented and therefore strongly encourages qualified women to apply. The university also sees itself as a family-friendly university and promotes the compatibility of science/work and family. The university is particularly committed to the professional participation of severely disabled employees and therefore welcomes applications from severely disabled people. In cases of equal qualifications, applications from people with severe disabilities will be given preference. To safeguard interests, a disability or equal opportunity must be included in the application. Please  submit
