About the role
The holder of this post is primarily associated with the ‘Informing Interventions: Analytics in Action’ project, funded through Imperial’s Learning and Teaching Strategy. The post holder will facilitate the piloting of data-driven classroom interventions in collaboration with the other project team members from across the University. Other aspects of the role will include leading the development of data processing pipelines, co-creation of classroom activity to capitalise on learning analytics insights and the educational evaluation of the pilots conducted for publication. The data supporting this will be from a mixture of sources, including our uniquely granular and high-quality data on student self-study, as well as data on use of video capture, and access to learning management systems.
This post is part of a cross-department project and includes contributing to the delivery of the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in one or more of the participating departments, which include Physics, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, and Aeronautics. The post is based in, and line-managed by, the Department of Materials Science.
What you would be doing
- To research the literature and modern practices in data-driven classroom activities, including the evaluation of current practices and incorporating the experiences of students and staff.
- To ideate, plan and execute innovative data-driven classroom activities in collaboration with project staff and students/staff in the participating departments.
- To develop data processing pipelines that can be used to plan and implement classroom activities.
- To organise Action Research supporting our data-driven classroom activities.
- To champion the development of innovative and data-driven teaching methods in the participating faculties.
- To provide input to teaching delivered by the participating faculties, particularly in respect to recent developments in pedagogy, technology, and learning analytics.
- To publish research based on delivering data-driven activities.
What we are looking for
- A degree or equivalent qualification in a related discipline/be nearing the completion of a PhD in a relevant discipline
- The capacity to work towards an appropriate teaching qualification
- A background in engineering or physical sciences will be preferred, but outstanding candidates with other relevant areas of expertise will also be considered.
- Some previous experience of higher-education teaching activities, along with the associated administrative work
- A track record of teaching in engineering or physical science in higher education at the highest standards
- Demonstrable familiarity with a variety of student-centred strategies to promote and assess learning and to provide constructive feedback
- Background in statistics or data science
- Familiarity with SQL or a structured data language
