Job Description

We are looking for a Research Fellow to improve the NEEDLE machine learning code for classifying astrophysical transients and manage spectroscopic follow up.

The successful applicant will work with the transients research group to improve our machine learning infrastructure for real-time classification of luminous supernovae and tidal disruption events. They will contribute to follow-up observations and supporting students.

  

About the person:

  

The successful candidate must have, and your application should clearly demonstrate that you meet the following essential criteria:

  • A PhD in astrophysics, or with thesis submitted by the time of taking up the post.
  • Expertise in developing and training machine learning codes for astronomical data.
  • Experience with real time transient spectroscopic classification.
  • Experience in triggering and analysing follow-up observations with large telescopes.
  • Programming experience in Python and standard astronomy software packages.

Fixed term contract posts are available for the stated period in the first instance but in particular circumstances may be renewed or made permanent subject to availability of funding.
