2. PhD Program in Surgical Robotics

About PhD Position

Minimally invasive surgery has revolutionized medicine by enabling interventions without large incisions, thereby significantly improving clinical outcomes. Such surgical techniques include insertions of needles, catheters, and micro-robots. For effective medical diagnosis and treatment, the device must reach its intended target. In order to increase the targeting accuracy of the procedure and improve clinical outcomes, the goal of this research project is to develop methods for modeling and controlling a range soft/flexible surgical devices and medical microrobots, as they interact and navigate through the body. Techniques would be developed to track and control the path of the novel devices using images (MR and ultrasound imaging modalities).

4. PhD Program in Nano-scale characterization of interfaces between electrolyte

About PhD Position

As a PhD student you will develop and use AFM-based spectroscopy to nanoscopically characterize the interfaces between electrolyte, semiconductor- and cocatalyst-nanoparticles under photocatalytic operating conditions (e. g. in liquid, under applied bias and illumination) and to establish surface property-catalytic activity correlations. Atomic scale surface structure, charge density, hydration state and morphology are assessed using amplitude modulation AFM. To elucidate the catalytic performance at the nanoscale, conductive and electrochemical AFM will be used. These methods should reveal correlations between topographic and catalytic activity via current mapping, and identify the underlying charge transport mechanism via local IV-spectroscopy.

PhD Career: What are the Career Option?

6. PhD Program in Engineered Therapeutics

About PhD Position

Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest cancer types with a dismal 5-year survival rate of less than 8%. One major problem with pancreatic cancer is the poor tumor delivery of chemotherapy which leads to treatment failure. This project aims to develop specific hydrogel formulation combining different therapeutics to be injected locally in the pancreatic tumor. The developed formulations will be tested in advanced 3D in vitro models, as well as in vivo mouse tumor models. The project will be performed at University of Twente in collaboration with industrial partners OncoLize BV and ScarTec Therapeutics BV and researchers from Leiden University Medical Centre.

7. PhD Program in Applied Stem Cell Technologies

About PhD Position

You will use human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived organoids of the brain, intestine and vagus nerve cultured onto a microfluidic chip to investigate key molecular aspects of human physiology and Parkinson’s disease. Under the supervision of a highly skilled post-doctoral scientist and in collaboration with other groups at the University of Twente you will use existing differentiation procedures to create brain stem, intestinal and vagus nerve organoids from pluripotent stem cells. Following their generation, you will culture them into home-manufactured microfluidic devices and validate the identity, stage of maturation, and functional activity of the organoids using biomarker (protein and mRNA) expression, imaging, epithelial barrier integrity and electrophysiological read-outs.
