1. PhD Program in developing 3D imaging techniques for studies of intact biological tissues
About PhD Position
Professor Per Uhlén’s research laboratory, located within the Unit of Molecular Neurobiology at the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics (MBB) in Karolinska Institutet, Solna, is renowned for its pioneering work in the imaging field. Our team excels in developing advanced 3D imaging technologies, and we have published groundbreaking research in cancer and neuroscience applications (Tanaka N, et al., Nature Biomedical Engineering, 2017 and 2020, and Kanatani S, et al., bioRxiv, 2022). Our primary objectives are to enhance the understanding of tissue architecture of the central nervous system and tissue heterogeneity in cancer, as well as to develop cutting-edge imaging tools.
Application Deadline: 30.Jun.2023
2. PhD Program in immunology and adoptive cell therapy
About PhD Position
Adoptive Cell Therapy (ACT) with tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (TIL) has successfully ben used as therapy for patients with malignant melanoma, and is now practiced at a number of clinical centers worldwide, including at Cancer Center Karolinska (CCK). At CCK we have the only GMP unit in Sweden with expertise and the authorization to use TIL therapy. Our ACT clinical trial is unique as it is combined with a Dendritic cell (DC) based tumor vaccine. The results are encouraging and shows that the combination of TIL cells and a DC vaccine induce improved clinical responses. The overall aim is to build on these clinical results and improve ACT for patients with metastatic melanoma and furthermore extend these findings to other solid cancers focusing on gynecological cancers.
Application Deadline: 07.Jun.2023
3. PhD Program in Preventing functional decline in acutely hospitalized older patients
About PhD Position
The research project aims to evaluate the results of a three-arm randomized trial (two exercise groups where one group receives simpler exercise and the other more individualized exercise and one group receives usual care) among patients 75 years and older who are treated in hospital due to acute illness . It is an ongoing study being conducted at geriatric clinics in the Stockholm region. Training and data collection is carried out by staff at the geriatric clinics.
Application Deadline: 2023-06-05
4. PhD Program in HIV epidemiology
About PhD Position
The Swedish HIV cohort is heterogenous, including a large proportion of migrants, diverse modes of HIV transmission and individuals from a range of different socioeconomic backgrounds. The cohort is aging and faced with increasing risk of age-related comorbidities. Additionally, chronic HIV-related inflammation, legacy of pre-treatment immunodeficiency and injury, and past and present ART may also add to the development of comorbidity. Meanwhile, half of people living with HIV are still diagnosed late with well-known consequences for prognosis and transmission. It is still uncertain why some people living with HIV do not recover their CD4 cell count despite sustained HIV viral suppression, so called immunological non-responders.
Application Deadline: 02.Jun.2023
5. PhD Program in infection immunology with a focus on tuberculosis
About PhD Position
Infectious diseases are a major source of global mortality and morbidity. Although vaccines are highly efficacious in controlling the spread of certain diseases, some pathogens, such as HIV-1, Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Plasmodium falciparum malaria have been shown to be highly difficult to develop efficacious vaccines against. For tuberculosis, most infected people do not develop active disease, indicating that their immune response is sufficient to control the infection. This PhD project aims to investigate the mechanisms responsible for that protection. The work to be performed by the PhD student includes preparing and organizing samples for our biobank, ex vivo and in vitro cell culture, cell biological and molecular techniques to investigate cell function, and sequencing and bioinformatic analysis following cell perturbations.
Application Deadline: 01.Jun.2023
PhD Career: What are the Career Option?
6. PhD Program in epigenetic gene regulatory mechanisms and early human development
About PhD Position
We expect that the student will advance the project under supervision and will gradually acquire independence in planning, executing, analyzing and presenting data. The successful candidate will take part in all research-related activities such as group meetings, departmental seminars, relevant international meetings, supervision of other students and researchers, if necessary, as well as contribute to common lab routines. The project is embedded in a collaborative research program with Fredrik Lanner’s group at CLINTEC department and the student will play an active role in driving the collaborative effort in elucidating early human embryogenesis.
Application Deadline: 31.May.2023
7. PhD Program in …
About PhD Position
In this project we will use a technique called cell barcoding to identify efficient drug combinations to overcome metastatic heterogeneity in pediatric neuroblastoma. In cell barcoding a molecular barcode is inserted into cells’ genomes which makes it possible to monitor thousands of tumor subclones simultaneously and see how they evolve as they respond to drugs. We use this to identify and characterize cell populations that survive standard of care treatment, and to identify drugs specifically targeting those cell populations – a concept we have termed Precision Lethality.
Application Deadline: 30.May.2023
8. PhD Program in Rheumatology
About PhD Position
We are looking for a PhD-student who will work in the JRBCM project focusing on characterization of the anti-inflammatory and anti-rheumatic actions of substances from plants used in traditional Chinese medicine. The project is generating a compound library with known and unknown molecules and the further identification of compounds will be guided by human bioactivity assays. Mechanisms of actions of bioactive compounds will be investigated using relevant to Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) inflammatory cells and signaling pathway reporter assays. Quantitative proteomic approach will be applied to identify proteins whose levels are altered after treatment with specific bioactive compounds.
Application Deadline: 29.May.2023
9. PhD Program in Role of Mechanotransduction in Breast Cancer
About PhD Position
The student will combine experimental studies with bioinformatic analysis to define how the matrix stiffness controls mRNA-translation to drive breast cancer progression. This includes identifying the responsible mechano-signaling, the regulated genes, which of these genes contributes to breast cancer progression and their relation to patient status and outcome. The project is run in collaboration with associate professor Ola Larsson at SciLifeLabs/KI, expert in mRNA-translation.
Application Deadline: Open until filled
10. PhD Program in prostate cancer epidemiology
About PhD Position
The work aims to reduce prostate cancer mortality through more accurate risk prediction and individualized early diagnostics. The project will study strategies for individualized early diagnosis and screening of prostate cancer including optimization of the interventions carried out by the healthcare system within the framework of a possible future screening program for prostate cancer. Part of the project will focus on how an existing pilot project for organized prostate cancer testing in Sweden is performing. We are now looking for a PhD student with a strong epidemiological and medical background to work on these projects.

11. PhD Program in exosome biology with focus on lung diseases
About PhD Position
The PhD student will work in studies on clinical material from patients with sarcoidosis and COPD, and how their EVs stimulate or regulate immune responses. The student will also investigate if advanced EV detection tools can be used to develop EVs as biomarkers in lung diseases. The studies will be performed in model systems in vitro and in vivo.
