1. PhD Program in Neurobiology

About PhD Position

Ischemic stroke (IS) is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. Early reperfusion is imperative to improve the final clinical outcome. However, this re-establishment is only offered to <5% of all patients and initiates a cascade of complex responses that lead to chronic inflammation. In this proposal, we aim to pave the way for a paradigm shift in IS treatment, centered on the vision that active resolution of post-stroke inflammation and improved remyelination processes can be obtained by blocking detrimental and boosting pro-regenerative inflammatory processes.

We will use selective anti-inflammatory therapeutics to study the effect of treatment on functional outcome and cellular and molecular changes in microglia and leukocytes in human and murine IS. We will use state-of the art techniques and believe that the results will lead to significant clinical benefits, by extending the therapeutic window for intervention and enabling a more efficacious, flexible, and safer treatment of IS.

2. PhD Program in Advanced Electrolytic Capacitors

About PhD Position

The task portfolio of the PhD will be linked to several projects within CIE. CIE is embedded in a powerhouse in electronics, which includes researchers and developers at universities and industries on both sides of the Danish-German border. CIE is a new initiative striving for high quality and great impact of its research, innovation, and education. Central to achieving this objective is access to state-of-the-art facilities and close collaborations with industries.

The aim of the position is to build strong knowledge and competencies within modern electrolytic including development of lifetime models and material characterization to produce a state-of-the art high voltage electrolytic capacitor.

3. PhD Program in Computational Cosmology at CP3-origins

About PhD Position

The research group led by Dr Sofie Marie Koksbang at the Centre for Cosmology and Particle Physics Phenomenology (CP3-Origins) at the Department of Physics, Chemistry and Pharmacy invites applications for two PhD positions. The positions are to contribute to the Villum Young Investigator project entitled “Observational effects of big and small structures in the Universe” and have a strong focus on numerical work.

We are looking for outstanding and highly motivated candidates with potential to excel in computational cosmology, and who are looking to join a dynamic, curiosity-driven research group. CP3-Origins offers a stimulating research environment with research topics ranging from cosmology to dark matter astro-particle physics, quantum gravity, black holes and quantum field theory.

4. PhD Program in Mathematics

About PhD Position

We are seeking highly motivated students interested in various areas of pure mathematics or theoretical physics, e.g. algebra, algebraic geometry, differential geometry, algebraic topology, complex geometry, quantum topology, geometric analysis, operator algebra, number theory, quantum field theory, string theory or mathematical physics, but also within the field of applications of pure mathematics in the study of biology, in particular macro-molecular folding, in big data analysis and in quantum computing.

5. PhD Program in Computational and Lab-based Systems Chemistry

About PhD Position

The aim of this project is to develop computational methods for MEC modularization for the production of chemicals from biomass. The project will involve design of novel pathways for products such as bioplastics using computational techniques at University of Vienna, Austria and a nine-month secondment at the University of Sheffield, UK to develop microfluidics methods for screening relevant enzymatic reactions and “wet-lab debugging” approaches. You will also undergo a short secondment to Fluigent for training in microfluidics.

We are seeking a PhD candidate who has or is expected to have a Master’s degree in chemical/biochemical engineering, computer science, chemistry or related discipline at the time of recruitment. Some knowledge of enzyme kinetics, systems chemistry/biology or mathematical biology would be beneficial. Willingness to travel and work as part of an interdisciplinary team is essential!

PhD Career: What are the Career Option?

6. PhD Program in Computer Science/ Cheminformatics/ Applied Mathematics

About PhD Position

The goal of this project is to develop novel theoretical concepts and software implementations to describe the dynamics of rule-based chemistries at multiple scales and from multiple perspectives. This includes the development of a stochastic simulation engine for rule-based reaction systems specified in the double pushout formalism, alongside with a novel framework to analyse stochastic trajectories in dynamically changing spaces.

Departing from an algebraic approach like chemical organisation theory we will harness, in particular, those systems in which through the interaction of their components novel components are generated, which effectively changes the state space these components live in. This should open up a novel perspective on highly diverse molecular systems, including instances of chemical evolution, polymer formation, enzymatic synthesis design, lipidomics, prebiotic chemistries, or multifunctional phase-separated protein complexes in biological cells.

8. PhD Program in Computer Science/ Cheminformatics

About PhD Position

In this project, the PhD candidate will focus on computational and declarative approaches to model and solve multi-enzymatic cascade design problems. Among the chemical aspects to model and optimize for are: allosteric regulation of enzymes, competitive inhibition of the active sites, cofactor recycling, switching between different operation modes, and overall autocatalytic behaviour.

The candidate will develop such approaches and conduct extensive in-silico testing. We aim to compare and evaluate the computational tools developed in this project against wet-lab data produced in other projects of TACsy. The student will have a three-months research stay with our industry partner (Fluigent) focusing on microfluidics and lab-on-a-chip technologies.

9. PhD Program in Population Dynamics

About PhD Position

The PhD position is funded by the SCOR Chair on Mortality. As a part of the Chair, the successful PhD candidate will have the opportunity to conduct research on mortality and multi-morbidities. The research efforts aim to use novel methods in demography and data science to provide a deeper understanding of the morbid conditions leading to death, how these conditions changed over time and how they differ between populations. The selected PhD candidate is expected to work on at least one of the following topics

  • (1) reliability of multiple causes of death data,
  • (2) association between morbidities,
  • (3) probability of dying from one cause rather than another competing cause or
  • (4) number years lived with morbidities.

The project will be carried out at CPop, but the PhD student is expected to collaborate with researchers from other partner universities and from the insurance industry. In particular, the PhD position comprises a research stay of 3-4 months in Paris and participation to a yearly seminar organized with the SCOR Foundation.
