Missions
Within the PEPR One Water (Eau Bien Commun) which is one of the Priority Research Programs and Equipment) launched as part of the Future Investment Plan (PIA4) by France 2030, to “Understand and innovate for viable, equitable and sustainable water management”, the Targeted Project No. 8 (OneWater Data) project aims to share, make accessible and understandable to all, water data.
As part of the actions carried out by the Data Terra Research Infrastructure and its data and services hub on continental surfaces THEIA, within the One Water Data (PC8) project, the use of the Galaxy tool has been initiated. The objective is to acquire expert-level knowledge of this tool, to be the main contact with the Galaxy community for the THEIA hub as well as with the partners of the OneWater Data PC8 project.
The engineer’s mission will be to develop Galaxy tools mainly from existing ‘water’ business scripts based on use cases identified within the OneWater Data and Gaia Data projects (project which aims to develop Data Terra services). These scripts will run on digital water resources provided in accordance with FAIR Water Data (OGC, W3C, INSPIRE, RDA, etc.). The tools to be integrated will notably concern hydrological and hydrogeological modeling algorithms. The use of the Planemo tool, the Galaxy tool development kit, on a Linux command line environment is one of the potential tools. GitHub/GitLab will be used for code management, continuous integration and tool publication aspects.
Activities
The engineer will be attached to the UAR Data Terra and will work closely with the technical coordination of the Data Terra research infrastructure (pilot of the GAIA-Data analysis platform) and the technical coordination of the Targeted Project “One Water Data platform”. He/She will be hosted in the BRGM premises (Orléans – 45). Teleworking is possible within the framework of the arrangements put in place by the employer. As part of his/her activities, he/she will also participate in the various events organized by the OneWater Data Targeted Project, the associated challenge and more broadly in the actions carried out by the National Program.
His/Her missions will be:
– to develop Galaxy tools based on the use cases identified within the OneWater Data and Gaia Data projects (in particular in connection with the THEIA, FormaTerre, etc. poles)
– to develop training material to understand the use of the tools developed.
– to participate in training courses that will be implemented on remote sites across Europe and to participate in the mobilization of water data at the national level.
– to test the application of tools and workflows developed on water data shared by the OneWater Data Platform and by the data and service centers of the IR Data Terra (THEIA, FormaTerre, etc.).
SKILLS
– Knowledge of the Linux environment in command line
– Mastery of programming languages: Python, R language
– Desired experience of the Galaxy environment and practices of integrating tools in this ecosystem (e.g. use of Planemo)
– Experience of working in a Dockerized environment highly recommended
– Interest in the creation of training material will be a plus
– Interest in data from the world of water. Experience in hydrological and hydrogeological data processing would be a plus
– Interest in participating in training activities will also be a plus
Preferably, hold a “Master 2” level diploma from a school or university in the field of geosciences, bioinformatics / computer science
Knowledge:
– Advanced mastery of Python, R etc.
