The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 56 000 students and 6 600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

At the Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology, at the Sahlgrenska Academy, we conduct research and education covering a wide range of knowledge areas. The institute comprises five different departments: Clinical Neuroscience, Health and Rehabilitation, Pharmacology, Physiology and Psychiatry and Neurochemistry.

The Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology is now looking for an Associate Researcher, based at the Department of Psychiatry and Neurochemistry. You will work in a research group with a focus on neurodegenerative diseases and who work to develop new diagnostic methods and work to understand the processes that contribute to disease development. We use patient material, cell models and zebrafish in our work. The part of the group that works with zebrafish is based at Sahlgrenska hospital and we are now looking for a person to take care of the zebrafish and the facility in which they are kept.

Duties

We are looking for you who are passionate about maintaining aquatic systems and like freshwater fish! With us, you will work flexibly in a small team with great opportunity for personal development. As a zebrafish facility staff member, you will play a critical role in maintaining the health and well-being of our zebrafish colonies, which are critical to our research into neurodegenerative diseases. Your responsibilities will include daily care routines, tank maintenance, health monitoring and breeding of zebrafish. The main responsibility within the employment is to be independently responsible for the day-to-day care of the fishermen and to train other staff to ensure that all procedures are carried out according to regulations. It also includes planning the consumption of equipment, updating protocols and inspecting that the facility adheres to current rules for animal welfare and animal protection.

As the person responsible for the fish facility, we want you to be interested in optimizing maintenance and routines to develop our business to the best. There is also good opportunity to perform various forms of molecular biological techniques used to determine the genetic background of the fish. Therefore, previous experience with molecular biology techniques is advantageous. The fish systems require some technical maintenance where an interest in a more technical kind can be an advantage. You should be able to organize and independently carry out your own daily work in consultation with your group leader. You will interact daily with the researchers using the facility and should be motivated to provide support and assistance. The well-being of the animals as well as providing an excellent service to the researchers is a high priority.

Qualifications

Requirement:

  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Responsibility and good ability to work independently
  • Good communication skills (both English and Swedish) both verbally and in writing
  • Understanding and respect for the well-being of animals
  • Good ability to collaborate in a group
  • The work demands that you have the physical capacity to handle heavier objects as the fish tanks weigh about 10kg

Meritorious:

  • Education in molecular biology
  • Previous work with zebrafish or other aquatic animals
  • Technical ability

Great importance will be placed on personal suitability.

Employment

The employment is limited (temporary) for 11 months, 100% of full-time, and is placed at the Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology. Starting date: as soon as possible or as agreed.
