The Health Disparities and Public Policy program in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine invites applications for a postdoctoral scholar position.

The postdoctoral scholar will work with the principal investigator, Dr. Linda Teplin, and co-Investigators, Drs. Karen Abram, Leah Welty, and Sara Thomas, on three projects: (1) the Northwestern Juvenile Project, a 30-year longitudinal study of health needs and outcomes of 1829 youth in juvenile detention; (2) Next Generation, an intergenerational component added to the Northwestern Juvenile Project, which examines intergenerational patterns in substance use disorders, delinquency and firearm involvement, as well as the effects of parents’ incarceration on children; and (3) a newly-funded extension of the Northwestern Juvenile Project that will examine the long-term consequences of incarceration for health (among participants now median age 43).  The scholar will engage in a variety of research tasks including literature searches, research summaries, presentations, grant development, and manuscripts (with opportunities for co-authorship).

Qualifications 

Applicants should demonstrate a strong interest and familiarity with epidemiological research, preferably intergenerational and/or longitudinal studies and health equity research.  Applicants should demonstrate relevant training and skills including:

  • PhD or equivalent in psychology, public health, sociology, or a related field
  • Experience with large-scale datasets
  • Experience with large federally funded studies
  • Familiarity with quasi-experimental data analysis, longitudinal data, survey design, and epidemiology
  • Strong writing skills
  • Participation and activity in the scientific community
  • Ability and desire to work in a highly collaborative and interdisciplinary environment

The position is initially offered for one year with up to a two-year extension. Northwestern University provides a comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, vision, disability insurance, retirement benefits, and childcare support (see more at postdocs.northwestern.edu), and a competitive salary ($61,000–$74,000 per year, dependent on the candidate’s background and experience).
