PhD: Sensing & Smart Measurement System for Monitoring Biological Soil Quality in Regenerative Agriculture
PhD @Wageningen University & Research posted 1 week agoJob Description
This is PhD position is based on the ReGeNL program, which aims to develop a future-proof agricultural sector together with Dutch farmers. The program seeks to align agricultural practices with soil improvement, nature restoration, and sustainable revenue model for farmers. Healthy, living soil is essential for delivering and regenerating ecosystem services, thereby strengthening the ecological, social and economic dimensions of food production. The central objective of Action Line #3 is to measure, monitor and predict the impacts of regenerative agriculture spanning – biophysical, social, economic. At the farm level, these insights are crucial for developing and implementing effective business models. At the regional level, they inform policy measures, and within value chain(s), they enable the valuation of regenerative outcomes.
Your Duties and Responsibilities
As a PhD candidate in Sensing & Smart Measurement Systems for Monitoring Biological Soil Quality in Regenerative Agriculture, you will contribute to building the scientific foundation for a practical, efficient, and cost-effective system to monitor ecosystem services in regenerative farming. Your research will focus specifically on sensing biological soil characteristics, a critical component of soil health and resilience.
Your main responsibilities will include:
- Defining the appropriate scale, resolution, and precision for effective ecosystem service monitoring, which will serve as the baseline for system design.
- Designing and developing an innovative measurement system, integrating state-of-the-art sensors and smart IoT technologies tailored for agricultural environments.
- Calibrating and validating the system through rigorous laboratory experiments and real-world field trials on farms.
- Applying your expertise in engineering disciplines such as system design, instrumentation, signal processing, sensor calibration, data modelling, and programming.
- Conducting fieldwork in collaboration with farmers, ensuring the system is robust and suitable for practical on-farm use.
- Actively participating in the ReGeNL community, working closely with farmer cooperatives, value chain partners, financial institutions, research organizations, and technology providers.
This position offers a unique opportunity to apply your technical skills in a multidisciplinary setting, contributing directly to the transition toward more regenerative, sustainable agriculture.
