About PhD Program,

The PhD in Neuroscience is a research-intensive program to train students for independent research careers in higher education, industry, and government agencies.

Our graduate students work with leading faculty from multiple departments, colleges, and campuses across WSU, providing a broad selection of mentors and potential topics for thesis research.

Prospective international applicants must

  1. Have earned the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution. Typically, students should have completed a minimum of four years of study beyond grade 12.
  2. Have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or a B grade or better.

  5. Provide three letters of recommendation through the online application process.
  6. Gain admittance from the department or program in which you are seeking a degree or pursuing graduate study. The department/program may have additional requirements. Applicants can learn about the specific departmental by checking the Degree Programs page.
  7. Submit unofficial transcripts from all colleges and universities attended. If the transcripts are not in English, an unofficial copy of the transcript in the applicant’s native language, along with its English translation, is acceptable. These transcripts should be uploaded through the online application. NOTE: Once transcripts are submitted, they become part of the official Graduate School application file and cannot be returned or transferred. Foreign Credential and Transcript Evaluation is not required.

PhD Funding Coverage,

Graduate assistantships may include a tuition waiver, health insurance, and a monthly salary. Students should contact their department or graduate program to learn more about assistantship opportunities. If you receive additional awards in conjunction with financial aid or assistantship, such as a scholarship, fellowship, or other stipend, you may need to fill out an Academic Year Revision Request to have your cost of attendance reviewed by a Financial Aid advisor.

  • College transcripts (unofficial acceptable for initial review–upon admittance official transcripts are required by the WSU Graduate School)
  • Three (3) letters of reference submitted directly by the reference writer
  • Resume or curriculum vitae
  • TOEFL, IELTS, MELAB scores or language waiverfor all international applicants from a country whose primary language is not English.
  • Personal statement (350 words maximum)
  • Describe why you are interested in studying neuroscience and identify faculty mentors (minimum of 3) you are interested in working with and explain why (if admitted to WSU, you will be able to change your choice of mentor during lab rotations).
  • Describe an achievement you are proud of and discuss how you reached your goal and any obstacles you had to overcome to reach it. Or conversely, tell us about a time when you didn’t achieve a goal and what you learned from the experience.
  • Writing statement (350 words maximum + 350 words for citations)
  • Describe a major finding in neuroscience and/or biomedicine over the past five (5) years and explain why you think it was important. Be sure to cite references used after the writing statement.
