About PhD Program,

The Musicology program at Case Western Reserve University provides rigorous academic study and advanced training, preparing professionals for leadership roles in music research and scholarship. Each student collaborates with a faculty advisor to create a customized program of study tailored to their specific research interests and professional goals.

We offer a PhD in Musicology, along with a diverse array of musicology courses that are integral to the undergraduate and graduate curricula at both CWRU and the Cleveland Institute of Music, our partner institution within the Joint Music Program.

Prospective students who wish to pursue graduate study in Music History, should apply directly to the PhD in Musicology.

PhD Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,   

All applicants must have the equivalent of a four-year, US bachelor’s degree conferred prior to the start of the term of admission.

Applicants must have a B-average or rank in the upper third of their graduating class at an institution where status and programs are readily assessed.

PhD Funding Coverage,

Every applicant offered admission should be able to attend. No student should be denied an education at Case Western Reserve University simply for financial reasons. And so, the university has sophisticated financial aid programs and scholarship opportunities to ease the financial burden. The Financial Aid office can assist with finding funding such as scholarships, grants, student loans or student employment.

Graduate students should contact their degree program department for information about institutional grant assistance, stipends or assistantships. The School of Graduate Studies does not manage tuition assistance or funding.
