About PhD Program,

Princeton’s doctoral program in electrical and computer engineering draws top students from across the United States and around the world.

Most candidates enter the program directly after completing an undergraduate degree in engineering, science or mathematics. Prospective students should familiarize themselves with the faculty and the variety of our research. Strong applicants have a firm grasp of who we are and what we do. Admission is highly selective. Learn how to apply.

PhD Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,

To be eligible for admission to the Graduate School, applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, which is awarded prior to the date of enrollment at Princeton. International equivalents to the bachelor’s degree may, in some cases, have a normal program length that is shorter or longer than four years. No degree with a normal program length shorter than three years will be considered equivalent to a bachelor’s degree.

Applicants may submit one application per year only. This one application can be to one department, program, or combined program. The Graduate School will not offer admission to an applicant seeking a second Ph.D. in the same or similar field of study.

Princeton University does not discriminate on the basis of age, race, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, religion, national or ethnic origin, disability, or veteran status in any phase of its admission or financial aid programs, or other aspects of its educational programs or activities.

PhD Funding Coverage,

At Princeton, we see a direct relationship between strong financial support and the capacity to break new academic ground. We guarantee full funding to all degree-seeking Ph.D. candidates during their regular enrollment period. It’s an investment in our students and also in the University community, cultivating a unique academic environment in which creative thinking and original scholarship thrive.

At Princeton, we ensure that all Ph.D. students in regular enrollment have complete support as they pursue their intellectual passion. Our funding guarantee begins with full first-year fellowships for all, and includes tuition, our 12-month Student Health Plan(Link is external), and a base stipend that covers living expenses.

The funding mix after the first year varies by division and term, but typically includes a blend of internal fellowships, assistantships in research or instruction, and external fellowships that together cover tuition, the student health plan, and full stipend throughout regular program enrollment. (Ph.D. program length is typically four or five years. Learn more in our Fields of Study section.)
