About PhD Program,

Electrical and computer engineering is an incredibly broad field that equips students to develop emerging technologies that will help address some of the world’s biggest challenges in energy, health care, and transportation.

Prepare yourself for this work by engaging in collaborative, interdisciplinary research in state-of-the-art labs with our world-renowned faculty members in areas such as solid-state devices, photonics, image and video processing, and wireless communications.

Our faculty research falls into two research interest groups:

  • Systems and Signalsfocus on images and other forms of information and their acquisition, representation, processing, analysis and interpretation, coding, transmission through networks, wireless and other channels, and the control of linear and non-linear dynamic systems
  • Solid State, Photonic, and Quantum Technologiesfocus on the design, analysis, and proof-of-concept development of solid-state and photonic devices and systems.

PhD candidates may elect to participate in the Crown Family Graduate Internship Program. This opportunity allows the doctoral candidate to gain practical experience in industry or in national research laboratories in areas closely related to his or her research.

PhD Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,

You may only submit one application to one TGS program per academic year. Additional applications will not be reviewed and application fees will not be refunded.

Admission is offered for a specific program and a specific quarter of entry. We recommend that you only apply for a term that you are available to enroll in. However, if you are admitted to a program and are no longer able to start the program in the term you were accepted for, you may request to defer for up to one year. Please contact your program directly with an explanation of your need to defer. Your program and TGS will then review your request and will notify you if your request has been approved or denied.

TGS’s Program Statistics page posts valuable information regarding program admission statistics, completion rates, placements, etc.

In some PhD programs, you will earn the master’s en route to the PhD; in others, this is not considered necessary.

PhD Funding Coverage,

TGS and its graduate programs offer a wide array of financial support for doctoral students, who are typically fully-funded for four quarters per year for minimum of five years. Master’s students may receive scholarships or a student loan. MFA students can also apply for fellowships and assistantships.

Students are nominated for the prestigious Presidential Fellowship by their graduate program. Presidential Fellows are students who promise to combine outstanding intellectual or creative ability with the capacity to play an important leadership role in their disciplines and beyond.

TGS offers funding from annually-allocated award funds, endowed fellowships, foundations and other private support, as well as federal research and training grants.
