About PhD Program,
The iSchool is part of an internationally top-ranked research university and offers an interdisciplinary PhD experience. Students work with faculty members on research projects to address some of societies’ most pressing concerns. We offer a cooperative and supportive environment that allows a small group of highly qualified students to excel in their doctoral studies.
PhD Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,
- A minimum undergraduate grade-point average (GPA) of 3.00 on the equivalent of the last 60 semester hours (approximately two years of work) or a master’s degree with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 is required. Applicants from an international institution must demonstrate strong academic achievement comparable to a 3.00 for an undergraduate or master’s degree. The Graduate School will use your institution’s grading scale. Do not convert your grades to a 4.00 scale.
- Three core courses (topics include Research Design and Methodologies; Information Policy, Management & Institutions; Users, Uses & Contexts; Cultural History, Policies & Debates; Information Organization & Access)
- Four breadth courses in each of the following areas: Intro to Research Design, Thinking, Methods; Statistics/numerical literacy; Working with digital data; Pedagogy and Teaching.
- Three courses to complete a PhD minor
- Topic specialization courses
- Independent study credits
- Dissertation proposal: students submit a substantial dissertation proposal, often the first three chapters of their dissertation.
- Dissertation: all students research, write and defend a doctoral dissertation.
PhD Funding Coverage,
l All students offered a place on the Information School PhD program are guaranteed 5 academic years of full funding, including tuition, stipend, and health insurance.
- Funded positions include teaching assistant, project assistant, and research assistant positions in the department. These positions are 50% (20 hours) per week.

- All reentry applicants must pay the $75.00 application fee, plus the $6.00 processing fee if you are an international applicant. This is regardless of the last time you were enrolled, and is non-refundable.
