About PhD Program,
Boston College’s Ph.D. in English offers the opportunity to study with nationally recognized faculty in many periods, authors, and critical and theoretical streams. Candidates design their course of study from a wide range of courses, proceeding through a series of exams that culminate in a prospectus exam and the writing of the dissertation.
The small size of our doctoral program allows for an unusual level of access to faculty and flexibility in designing programs. Only four doctoral seminars, a course in Composition Theory, and an Advanced Research Colloquium are required; the rest of the Ph.D. candidate’s work is built around graduate courses, tutorials, and directed research. Each candidate shapes his or her own program to prepare for three sequential oral examinations and a doctoral dissertation.
PhD Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,
You do not necessarily need a master’s degree to enter into a Ph.D program; however, the faculty will look for the proper coursework, experience, and maturity when admitting applicants into a Ph.D program.
Transcripts are required from each post-secondary institution you have attended, including transcripts containing nondegree coursework and, if applicable, transcripts from study-abroad programs.
PhD Funding Coverage,
All Ph.D. candidates are guaranteed to receive full-tuition scholarships and competitive stipends for five years. The stipend for 2023-24 is $30,000.
in addition to the stipend, guaranteed for five years, the department and various other units across campus offer graduate assistantships and research assistantships by application. The graduate school and the Irish Studies program offer sixth-year (or beyond) funding on a competitive basis at the same level of support as the stipend for years 1-5. The Clough Center for the Study of Constitutional Democracy also offers short-term and long-term doctoral fellowships that can supplement income.
