About PhD Program,
The Program in Applied and Computational Mathematics offers a select group of highly qualified students the opportunity to obtain a thorough knowledge of branches of mathematics indispensable to science and engineering applications, including numerical analysis and other computational methods.
The doctoral dissertation may consist of a mathematical contribution to some field of science or engineering , or the development or analysis of mathematical or computational methods useful for, inspired by, or relevant to science or engineering.
Satisfactory completion of the requirements leads to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in applied and computational mathematics.
PhD Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,
The Department of Mathematics offers graduate courses on various levels, all of which are oriented toward research. There are numerous seminars that encourage research even more directly. The content of courses varies considerably from year to year, and the course descriptions below should be read only as a rough guide. Students usually acquire the standard beginning graduate material primarily through independent study and consultations with the faculty.
To earn the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), the student must pass a language requirement and both portions of the general examinations, submit an acceptable dissertation and sustain a final public oral examination.
PhD Funding Coverage,
First-year students receive the University First-Year Fellowship in Natural Sciences & Engineering, plus full tuition and student health plan coverage. A select few are awarded special fellowships, which provide a supplement or prize to their base amount. All first-years are exempt from grading and teaching.
Second-, third- and fourth-year (and fifth-year) students are expected to grade or teach each semester and are paid as half Assistants in Instruction (AI) and half Assistants in Research (AR). Students are encouraged to apply for external funding. If a student is awarded an external fellowship that also pays stipend and tuition, they would be exempt from having any grading/teaching duties unless required for a teaching recommendation needed for most postdoctoral applications.

Application Requirement,
During the application process, you will be required to upload a statement of academic purpose, resume/curriculum vitae, transcripts, fall semester grades, and additional required files as specified by the individual degree program requirements. We suggest gathering these materials in advance and reviewing the file upload requirements below to make the application process as easy as possible.
Requirements: Application materials should only be uploaded online in the appropriate spaces provided and under the additional information section of the application. Princeton does not accept paper application materials, with the exception of architecture portfolios. Please refer to the file upload requirements for specific instructions. Also, please be sure to review any additional department or program requirements.
Test Scores: All test scores must be sent directly from the test center to Princeton University. Department codes are not used at Princeton and are not required by Educational Testing Services(Link is external) (ETS). Please refer to the Required Tests page for specific information on the tests. Please allow extra time for test scores to be received and reflected on the application checklist.
Recommendations: Do not delay submitting your application because you are waiting for recommenders to submit their recommendations. See the Recommendation Letters page for more information.
Revisions: Before submitting an application, double-check it. No revised documents will be accepted after the deadline.
International Students: There is only one application, which can be used by U.S. citizens, permanent residents or international applicants for any academic department or program.
