PhD Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,
Ph.D. applicants are required to select an area of research interest when applying.
The M.S. degree is only open to employees of firms with active membership in the department’s industrial associates program.
Students are required to take six courses and to perform satisfactorily, obtaining a minimum of a 3.0 average. Students may choose P/D/F enrollment for one of these six courses. Students may pursue coursework in the following subfields: chemical biology, inorganic chemistry, catalysis, and organic synthesis, physical experimental, theoretical and computational, or materials chemistry. Course selections and enrollment decisions are made in consultation with their faculty adviser to best meet their needs and research interests.
The Department of Chemistry requires that students demonstrate a breadth of knowledge in the field of chemistry. The breadth requirement is generally completed by successfully passing the qualifying exams in a minimum of three of the following subfields: organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, biochemistry, and chemical physics.
PhD Funding Coverage,
All students receive full financial support for the length of their course of study funded through fellowship, teaching and advisor support. This support is not a loan and does not require repayment. Students are provided tuition, health insurance and a stipend for housing and living expenses. More information about financial support, policies and rates.
Application Requirement,
Requirements: Application materials should only be uploaded online in the appropriate spaces provided and under the additional information section of the application. Princeton does not accept paper application materials, with the exception of architecture portfolios. Please refer to the file upload requirements for specific instructions. Also, please be sure to review any additional department or program requirements.
Test Scores: All test scores must be sent directly from the test center to Princeton University. Department codes are not used at Princeton and are not required by Educational Testing Services(Link is external) (ETS). Please refer to the Required Tests page for specific information on the tests. Please allow extra time for test scores to be received and reflected on the application checklist.
Recommendations: Do not delay submitting your application because you are waiting for recommenders to submit their recommendations. See the Recommendation Letters page for more information.
Revisions: Before submitting an application, double-check it. No revised documents will be accepted after the deadline.
International Students: There is only one application, which can be used by U.S. citizens, permanent residents or international applicants for any academic department or program.
