About PhD Program,
Biomedical engineering is an interdisciplinary field that applies engineering concepts to medicine and biology. This new doctoral program aims to produce researchers who can work seamlessly across disciplines to develop innovative solutions to improve human healthcare and well-being. This program currently has four specialized tracks of study: biomaterials, biomechanics, human performance, and mechanobiology. Learn more about degree requirements, funding, and how to apply.
PhD Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,
Prior to commencing graduate study, applicants must hold a minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited institution. Although no single field of undergraduate specialization is required for admission, applicants to the program should have an undergraduate degree that is appropriate to the study track(s) of interest. Applicants must also satisfy the minimum admission requirements for the Graduate College, which includes having an undergraduate grade point average of at least 3.00 (based on a 4-point scale). International applications must also satisfy the international admissions requirements.
PhD Funding Coverage,
All full-time students who have submitted complete applications by the application deadline are automatically considered for graduate assistantship (GA) funding. A GA will cover tuition costs and provide a competitive annual stipend. Funding for GA positions is available through the BME doctoral program, or from grant-funded projects. If accepted into the program, the Graduate Admissions Committee will provide applicants with information regarding any potential funding opportunities. Please be aware that offers of financial support are competitive.
Applicants are encouraged to contact BME faculty members who are doing work in areas that align with their own research interests and educational background about potential GA funding. Job announcements for specific grant-funded projects may also be posted below.
Application Requirement,
- Official transcripts from all colleges attended
- A brief personal statement (no more than two pages) describing the applicant’s academic and professional background, research experiences and interests, career goals, and motivation for graduate study. This statement should clearly state the study track(s) of interest and at leastone Ph.D. faculty member as a prospective advisor.
- A current resume or curriculum vitae
- Three letters of recommendation from academic or professional references that address your preparation for graduate study.
- (Optional) Official Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) General Test scores. Although the GRE is optional, it is highly recommended for students who may have weaknesses in other areas (e.g. GPA, prior research experience) or have transcripts from international schools
