About PhD Program,
PhD in Sociology, the Field offers a track that allows students to earn a PhD in Sociology with a focus on public policy. Students apply to Sociology, and, if admitted, complete all the requirements for and earn a Sociology PhD. Their special committee should be chaired by a faculty member in the Field of Sociology. However, for students in the public policy track, TA and RA funding would come from the Brooks School for Public Policy. This means that in years 2-4 they would primarily TA for Brooks courses and/or serve as research assistants for faculty members in public policy. This track is ideal for students who want to earn a PhD in Sociology with a policy focus.
Sociology students can also earn a PhD Minor in Demography through the Cornell Population Center.
PhD Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,
The grad program requires a minimum of seven courses
Students who have completed graduate research methods classes at other institutions are still required to take the Cornell methods sequence.
You must fulfill all requirements of the course at a satisfactory level.
PhD Funding Coverage,
Cornell funding packages are formally approved by Cornell University based on the annual projected budgets of the graduate school and the colleges that allocate resources. As a result, each cohort’s funding package (and size) can vary slightly. For legal purposes, the letter of admission, not this website, constitutes the official “contract” between the prospective graduate student and Cornell University.
Cornell funding packages typically offer six years of support, covering all tuition and providing a stipend for living expenses (including during the summer). In recent years, the field has been able to support students beyond their fifth year, usually through grant-funded graduate research assistantships.
Some students are also admitted with funding that they secure from foundation and government sources, and other students are admitted in collaborative arrangements with other units at Cornell. Students who apply for admission to the field of sociology have the opportunity to be considered for at least two additional sources of guaranteed funding: the IGERT training program for Food Systems and Poverty Reduction and the Department of Policy Analysis and Management.
