About PhD Program,

The Maryland Max Planck Ph.D. Program in Computer Science offers students a unique opportunity to pursue a Ph.D. degree under the supervision of faculty from the University of Maryland, USA, and a Max Planck Institute in Germany. Students are co-advised, perform collaborative research, take advantage of the expertise, resources, and culture at both institutions, and spend time in both countries.

PhD Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,

Applications are evaluated on the basis of educational and work experience, recommendation letters, and test scores. Undergraduate grade point averages are generally 3.5 or above. However, each applicant is considered individually. Our graduate program receives thousands of applications each year. Typically, the students we admit have strong backgrounds in computer science or related fields. They often boast impressive academic transcripts, extensive research experience, significant project work, and many come from prestigious STEM programs

Application to the graduate program is open to individuals with an undergraduate education that includes much of the material covered

Course material need not be identical, but should give students a background in these course concepts. While not a requirement for admission, having this background is recommended before submitting an application.

PhD Funding Coverage,

We are committed to funding all of our PhD students throughout their program,  contingent on making satisfactory progress. This is made possible with a combination of research assistantships, teaching assistantships, and fellowships.

  • Guaranteed Assistantships: All PhD students are guaranteed assistantships upon admission. These include positions as research assistants (RAs) on funded projects or as teaching assistants (TAs).
  • Competitive Stipends: For the 2023-2024 academic year, stipends range from $29,000 to $31,000 for a 9.5-month appointment, based on educational background and experience. Opportunities to earn additional income during the summer are available through further assistantships or internships at external research labs and companies.
  • Tuition and Benefits: Teaching and research assistantships cover tuition for up to 10 credits per semester and provide health insurance, paralleling the benefits offered to university staff and faculty.
