About PhD Program,
The Department of Physics at University of Alberta is a large comprehensive department with research programs covering all major areas of physics including computational, experimental and theoretical research in astrophysics, biophysics, condensed matter physics, geophysics, particle physics, space and plasma physics. We have 49 professors and about 50 research associates who do research with our approximately 160 graduate students. University of Alberta has a strong commitment to excellence, and it offers among the best teaching and research facilities in Canada.

PhD Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,
A minimum academic standard is required for all graduate admissions at the University of Alberta.
Applicants are generally required to have completed a four-year bachelor’s degree, or its academic equivalent, from an academic institution recognized by the U of A.
An admission grade point average of 3 on most 4-point grading systems or B on most letter grading systems, based on your most recent two years of full-time study (or equivalent) is required.
PhD Funding Coverage,
We must receive your application and all supporting documents by February 1 if you want to be considered for an Entrance Scholarship
There is no special application form for Entrance Scholarships. Applicants are automatically considered for all scholarships that they qualify for. All entrance scholarships are very competitive.
Students offered a MSc scholarship will be offered the Department’s regular basic funding in their 2nd year of the MSc degree
- $17,500 plus tuition & fees for one year
- open to Canadian and International students
- open to students who are citizens or permanent residents of Canada
- departmental deadline in late September-early October
- MSc level scholarships: $17,500 (CGSM) per year
- PhD level scholarships: $21,000 (PGSD) or $35,000 (CGSD) per year
- during the tenure of the NSERC scholarship, U of A provides a top up award with a value equal to tuition & fees
- CGSM and PGSD awardees are also offered a part-time graduate assistantship
