About PhD Program,
The Jackson School’s Master in Public Policy in Global Affairs prepares students to impact the global community through an academically rigorous and flexible interdisciplinary program.
The Jackson School continues the University’s tradition of attracting creative, intellectually curious individuals who come to Yale ready to define their own path to a career in global leadership and service.
Our M.P.P. occupies a unique place among international affairs graduate programs. The four-course interdisciplinary core curriculum provides students with a shared intellectual foundation focused on acquisition of the ideas, ways of thinking, and skills needed for leadership in global affairs. The small core both prepares students to identify and investigate solutions to the global issues they are most passionate about, and gives students the unusual flexibility to design an individualized course of study around those issues by taking advantage of the extraordinary breadth of courses and resources at Jackson and across the University.
The M.P.P. program is small by design, with about 35 students in each entering class. Coming with diverse backgrounds and career interests, Jackson’s graduate students form an intimate and close-knit community. Our size and approach create a dynamic atmosphere as students become a resource to each other and a window to the diversity and complexity of the global affairs field.
Our students leave Jackson with lifelong connections to colleagues working around the world in the public, nonprofit, and private sectors in diverse fields that include policy analysis, security analysis, trade and economic development, foreign affairs, human rights, international finance, and environmental policy.
We also offer a one year Master of Advanced Study (M.A.S.) in Global Affairs for mid-career professionals.
PhD Program Degree Eligibility with GPA,
All M.P.P. applicants must take the GRE General Test and have official scores released to institution code 3388. It is recommended that you take the GRE no later than mid-December. Students may not substitute the GMAT or LSAT for the GRE (unless they are a currently enrolled professional graduate student at Yale applying for a joint degree with Jackson).
Students whose native language is not English and who did not earn their undergraduate degree at a university where English is the language of instruction must also take the TOEFL, IELTS, or Cambridge English exam. The minimum score required for the TOEFL is 102 on the internet-based exam (iBT). A score of 7.5 – 8 on the IELTS is roughly the equivalent to the required minimum. Cambridge English C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency scores fulfill the minimum.
PhD Funding Coverage,
The Jackson School is committed to making our M.P.P. program accessible to every student who is admitted.
We guarantee fellowships to cover 100% of tuition for all incoming M.P.P. students.
About half of each M.P.P. cohort, including students from underrepresented regions such as Africa and Latin America, are awarded living stipends to cover the full cost of attendance.
The Jackson School has a number of fellowships that are awarded to students each year.
Many of the fellowships are awarded to incoming students based on general academic promise and merit. Some fellowships give priority to students focusing on particular issue areas (e.g., global health, climate change) or regions of the world (e.g., Africa, East Asia).
Applicants do not need to apply for specific fellowships to be considered nor is there a separate application to complete. All applicants who note that they would like to be considered for financial aid will automatically be considered for Jackson School fellowship by the admissions committee.
